Grape Growth Update Current Grape Growth Stage: Veraison |
Veraison marks the onset of ripening when the grapes start to change color, soften, and accumulate sugars. This stage is essential as it signals the transition from berry growth to berry ripening, directly impacting the flavor and quality of the wine. During this time, grapes transition from green to their varietal colors, indicating the start of ripening. They begin to develop sugars, which are vital for fermentation and overall wine quality. As the grapes begin to ripen, the birds which have all found the trellis system and vines a perfect place to build their nests now are testing the berries for their delectability! |
| | Our Marquette 2024 is at about 75% veraison |

| | | | The netting – another important part of vineyard operations |
| | To protect our hard-earned investment, we must now cover the vines with netting. Additional systems to deter bird-inflicted damage include a laser scanner (Autonomic 500) , installed on the peak of our barn, which uses a laser beam to deter birds, inspired by nature’s warning systems. Birds perceive the approaching laser beam as a physical danger and disperse to seek safety. Similarly, the Bird-X Squawker projects electronic pre-programmed sounds mimicking alarm and distress cries of pest birds and predators. |
