Letter from the OFA Board of Trustees |
Happy New Year! Setting goals for the year ahead, I am humored and fascinated by what social media influencers dictate to be the “Ins and Outs” for 2024. Several have resonated with me… In: Authentic experiences and relationships Out: Gimmicks and relationships of commodity My favorite “Out”: Filler – injectables and words! In the spirit of brevity, I am so proud of all that was accomplished by the OFA Board of Trustees, committees, members, and staff in 2023 and excited about the collective visions already underway for OFA/OCAD in 2024! In partnership with AIA Orlando, we had the privilege of awarding over $14,000 in scholarships to deserving architecture students in the local 2+2+2 programs. We were inspired by the presentation by Angela Brooks and Lawrence Scarpa and are looking forward to another scholarship awards celebration this April with a keynote speaker from AIA National’s 2023 Firm of the Year. |

Friends from our Central Florida community and beyond joined us for engaging tours of uniquely modern homes in New Smyrna Beach, The Atlantic Center for the Arts, Baldwin Park, and a trolley tour through historic downtown Sanford. We presented multiple film screenings of “Two Women & the Pavilion in the Water,” created by and featuring several of our own architects and members, and enjoyed unscripted quarterly socials at Architecture on Tap, hosted by some of Orlando’s local breweries. We ended a noteworthy year with two traditions, one old and one new. Our 5th Annual Art Show, hosted by City Arts and professionally judged, promoted art created by local artists and architects, and featured more submissions than any of the previous years. In December we celebrated the holidays and induction of our new AIA and OFA board members with colleagues and friends to launch both organizations into an exciting 2024. As you consider your “Ins and Outs” for the new year, I invite you to include OFA in your “Ins!” Visit www.orlandoarchitecture.org and please join us as members, committee members, and friends in many of the events, tours, and initiatives we are planning this year, all of which promote the importance of quality design, sustainability, historic preservation, and diversity in our profession and everyday lives. Thank you for your support! My personal Top 3 “Outs and Ins” (I prefer them reversed) for 2024: Out: Inefficiency due to lack of planning (my own and others) In: Connect the dots – benefit others linking personal experiences with personal connections Out: Dull routines and mindless couch time In: Enriching activity - try one new thing every month Out: Time spent on regret In: Time for quiet reflection and rest Best wishes for an intentional and enriching 2024! |

A JAMES GAMBLE ROGERS II CONNECTION By John Dalles |
A Charleston architect who, in the 1920’s moved to Orlando, David Hyer first worked for John Arthur Rogers, then opened his own office here. When he moved back to Charleston he left Rogers’ son, James Gamble Rogers II, to complete his work on the boards. A lot can happen in a decade. Hyer is better known for his work in Charleston. Hyer’s masterpiece here is the ideally situated Grace Phillips Johnson mansion “O-Po-Le-O” (“House Between the Waters”) on the isthmus between Lake Concord and Lake Adair. A grand Mediterranean Revival estate, it is visible from I-4 across Lake Concord, and is locally known as “The Swan Boat House”. We won’t be posting pictures of it without the owner’s permission, but the Pounds Motor Company building in Winter Garden is a historic landmark work of his in industrial style. The corner of the first floor was originally open as a drive through gas station. Next month we will feature the Pounds building. His biography has been added to our OFApedia tab under Architect HERE. |

Sam Stoltz Brought a Storybook World to Life in Central Florida By John Dalles |
Our apologies, last month the page link at the end of the article didn’t work. We are including it this month with the active link so you can read the whole article. 40 years before Disney, Sam Stoltz created fantasy homes for adventurous clients, often with his longtime client, Central Florida entrepreneur and developer H. Carl Dann. Today, these homes contribute tremendously to the architectural heritage of the Orlando area. Trained as an artist, Sam incorporated stunning murals and sculptural relief throughout many of his works. We have a new page on the Dubsdred Country Club and the life of Sam Stoltz on our OFApedia tab by our local historian John Dalles. Don’t overlook the “related Inks” on the Dubsdread page, it leads to a wealth of not-to-be-missed photos by John Dalles of Sam Stoltz houses around Central Florida. Continue reading about the history of Dubsdred Country club and the life of Sam Stoltz HERE. |

OFA Movie Night at Casa Feliz |
Thank you to everyone who joined us for our OFA Movie Night! It was a fun evening with two great movies presented. A double feature showing: "Through a Flowering Place" A story of the Women of the Saltwater Railroad: Anna Kingsley’s 19th Century journey from Africa to Northern Florida Territory, Haiti and back to the United States , and "Two Women and the Pavilion on the Water" The story of the first permanent band stand in Lake Eola. The film also covers Isabel Roberts design work with Ida Ryan and their firm, one of the first female architecture studios in the country in the 1920's, and their buildings built in Orlando and surrounding communities. |
