Discover Secrets of the Splendid Monarch Butterfly

(Sketching with a Touch of Natural History)

Monarch butterflies inspire us because of their beauty and extraordinary feats of long distance flight and navigation. They are stunning—flaunting broad wings of black and orange as adults and wearing festive striped pajamas as juveniles. For this exploration of natural history, we will combine art and science to uncover surprising relationships.

Listen in to learn how these insects handle consuming the poisonous leaves of the milkweed plant as hungry caterpillars; explore the powers of orientation and navigation of the adults of this most remarkable North American Monarch. Bring your colored pencils or watercolors and learn the tricks of the trade for drawing the different life stages.

This program is in partnership with Virtual Photo Walks and was funded in part by the Open Space Authority Urban Grant Program.

Alive Outside Adventure Series

Youth Alliance

June 26th, 10:00 AM – 1:00 PM

Coyote Valley Open Space Preserve

In partnership with Youth Alliance and REI we are kicking off our first ever Alive Outside Adventure Series!

Consisting of nature and gear orientation hikes at Coyote Valley Open Space Preserve and Mt. Madonna County Park and an overnight backpacking trip to Black Mountain Backpack Camp at Monte Bello Open Space Preserve; we are providing a life changing experience for 12 at-promise-youth. Our goals are to:

- Increase youth’s confidence in outdoor settings by developing new skills such as camp cooking, shelter building, and plant/animal identification.

- Show youth an alternative to drugs and gang violence by introducing them to the various hobbies associated with nature and the outdoors.

- Cultivate cultural and spiritual connection to nature through culturally relevant experiences for young participants who might have otherwise not had the opportunity to do so.

- Foster understanding of nature as a vehicle to healing and a guide to manage stress and anxiety.

- Provide rare, free access to professional, guided instruction to outdoor leadership through hands-on activities.

This project was funded in part by the Santa Clara Valley Open Space Authority Urban Grant Program.
