PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE
Dear NYSMTA Colleagues, Exactly one month from today, on Saturday, Oct, 17, we will have a rare opportunity to gather together, all of us, for an afternoon of musical sharing at the 2020 NYSMTA Virtual Symposium! Attendance is free, but your registration here will allow us to plan and manage our Zoom events in the most participatory manner. Thanks to the imaginative coordination of our Conference VPs Christine Johannsen and Bernadette Kessler, we will be able, through Zoom, to see one another, connect names with faces as well as learn about some of our current interests and concerns—all without the transportation, lodging and dietary concerns entailed in a live event. Our NYSMTA Virtual Symposium is just one manifestation of the “new normal” way of connecting to share research, new music, and ideas. I hope you will plan to attend as we learn together and celebrate the community we share through NYSMTA.
Sincerely, Beverly Smoker NYSMTA President |

GENERAL MEMBERSHIP MEETING AND CELEBRATION This biennial meeting provides an opportunity for members to bring forward items for consideration, to elect a new slate of officers, and to vote on proposed amendments to the NYSMTA Constitution and By-Laws. The 2020 NYSMTA Citation will be awarded at this time. The NYSMTA Citation has acknowledged and celebrated over many decades the professional accomplishments and contributions of outstanding members who have served the mission of our organization along with the promises and goals of our profession. Finally, we will take a moment to “toast” ourselves and our organization and our art. Although we gather together “remotely” at this time, we will affirm that we are still a community of musicians who will not be kept apart even by the current serious (yet, we must believe, temporary) challenges to our society. The slate of officers for the 2020 – 2022 term is as follows: President-Elect: Jacob Ertl (District 12) Vice-President for Competitions: Tracy Lipke-Perry (11) Co-Vice-Presidents for Conference: Kathryn Sherman (11) & Laura Amoriello (7) Vice-President for Membership: Stephanie Mercer (12) Vice-President for Professional Activities: Maura Hall (6) Secretary: Gary Fisher (12) Treasurer: Gary Palmer (12) They will join incoming President Hendry Wijaya (1) and Immediate-Past President Beverly Smoker (12) on the NYSMTA Administrative Committee. This slate was assembled by the NYSMTA Nominating Committee, comprised of Diane Birr, Neva Pilgrim, Ruthanne Schempf, Elier Suarez and Tomoko Uchino. We offer our gratitude to this group for their efforts on behalf of our organization. |

Amendments (2) to the NYSMTA By-Laws Article VIII: Standing Committees will be presented for membership approval vote. Changes are indicated in red. 1. Section 7: clarification of the intent that the Lecture Forum serves as a profession opportunity for NYSMTA members: “The Committee (Lecture Forum) shall seek, evaluate, and recommend member proposals for lecture (and performance) presentations at annual State Conferences. 2. Addition of a Section 12 establishing the Past Presidents Advisory Council: “Section 12. The Past Presidents Advisory Council shall consist of all NYSMTA Past Presidents. They will serve as an advisory council to the current NYSMTA president, particularly with respect to providing an historical perspective to current issues.” |

NYSMTA FORUM DISCUSSION At the conclusion of our General Membership Meeting/NYSMTA Celebration, we will host a moderated online discussion. This conclusion to the afternoon’s events will offer interactive participation by anyone attending the Symposium, member and non-member alike. It will be your voices heard at this time, an opportunity for everyone to share their relevant experiences and insights regarding this timely issue of pedagogical importance: NYSMTA Forum Discussion: Pandemic Positive Given the new environment in which we are all teaching and given that private music teachers are a creative, innovative, adaptable and determined bunch, this short discussion is intended for us to share our new and unexpected opportunities and ideas brought about by the circumstances of the pandemic. Not sure what that means? Let us consider these questions: * What experiences and aspects of video teaching and performing have given you new insights and/or new teaching or performing techniques? * Beyond the pandemic, what new procedures will you continue (if any) and why?
Please join us and share your insights at the NYSMTA Forum Discussion at the close of our Virtual Symposium! |
