Low literacy among adults is a serious problem that can negatively affect individuals, families, communities, and nations. According to data from the Program for the International Assessment of Adult Competencies (PIAAC), one in five U.S. adults (21 percent) has difficulty completing tasks that require comparing and contrasting information, paraphrasing, or making low-level inferences. "This translates into 43.0 million U.S. adults who possess low literacy skills". To get a clearer understanding of the landscape and needs of literacy learners, we need to draw on both quantitative and qualitative data. I hope the following resources can serve you in the collective endeavor to support literacy worldwide. |

"The National Center for Education Statistics surveyed 12,330 U.S. adults ages 16 to 74 living in non-institutionalized dwelling units from 2012 to 2017 for the Program for the International Assessment of Adult Competencies (PIAAC), an international study involving over 35 countries. Using small area estimation models, model-based estimates of literacy and numeracy proficiency have been produced for all U.S. states and counties, and for age and education groups at the state and county levels. By using PIAAC survey data in conjunction with data from the American Community Survey, the Skills Map provides reliable estimates of adult literacy and numeracy skills in all 50 states, all 3,141 counties, and the District of Columbia." Since 2005, the Florida Literacy Coalition (FLC) has published an annual Florida adult learner essay book, "a collection of original short stories, poems, and autobiographical narratives written by adult education and literacy students throughout the Sunshine State. The 2023 edition, It's Never Too Late, is a testament to their challenges, accomplishments, goals, and dreams". Drawing directly from the experiences of adult learners, these short stories can serve as excellent and level-appropriate reading and examples of essay writing for other adult literacy learners.
