News about the evolution of an installation in the making
Following the performance I spoke about in the last newsletter (link), I proposed several workshops designed for the participants to explore physical and gestural freedom with charcoal, graphite and different materials including cardboard.

Cardboard is often an insulator for people living on the streets and I decided to recycle these cardboard experiments from the workshops by painting poetic slogans over them.
The phrases were extracted from personal freewrites and make references to the theme of SKINT and society as I perceive it.
I painted them in simple capital letters treating the cardboard objects as finished works.
These will participate in a larger installation of the exhibition.
Words can be powerful, but I find integrating them directly into my paintings can immediately make the work didactic.
As free objects, they can be juxtaposed with the paintings to create layers of meaning but not dictate interpretation.
Working on cardboard is very freeing as I usually employ more "noble" materials such as wood and watercolour paper.
I also feel closer to the subject matter, improvising the making process with what is available (on the streets).
A contradiction to the work is the use of fine paints on the cardboard. It feels almost anarchistic to elevate this humble material by treating it as one would a room in a castle…
