Sand Troopers, 21 1/2 x 10"
I had so much fun painting the Dashing Sanderlings watercolor I shared with you in January, that I wanted to attempt another painting with the energy of those speedy little sandpipers and the roaring, crashing ocean waves. For this one (shown above), I focused on a different flock that we saw on the beach that same autumn day, one which was still mostly wearing its summer plumage, whereas the previous painting had a group that was decked out in their more subtle light grays for winter. So spiffy!
And then I did one more shorebird painting (shown below), this time with the strikingly beautiful Royal terns flying and wading amongst colorful seashells. These birds are magnificent, with their handsome black caps and tangerine orange beaks. I really wanted to show off their beauty, and enjoy the juxtaposition of the patiently wading terns in front of the tumultuous ocean just beyond.
(Thanks to Pam, a dear student and friend who suggested both of these fun titles for the paintings!)
