Interview Tip: Colour-Coded Post-it Notes

I can't take credit for this idea; it came to me from a client of mine who was preparing for her first international Zoom interview. She was applying for a leadership position and had to speak about three specific responsibilities in her new role. She decided to put down the keywords of her answers on three colour-coded post-it notes and stick them to the frame of her computer, surrounding her screen. She practiced using them with me in a mock-interview beforehand, and I have to say, she made looking at them so natural I didn't even notice.

So the other day, I passed this tip on to another client who was preparing with me for an upcoming interview. She loved the idea (this is her pre-interview photo above)!

Sometimes despite all our preparation, we might feel more confident with a few notes - and what better way than having them posted around the screen, there if we need them.

So what might be some questions you'd want to have prepared on post-its?

  • Tell us about your journey as a teacher. --> bullet point your career highlights

  • What does a highly effective class look like to you? --> bullet point your ideas

  • How do you stay current in your field of expertise? --> bullet point your sources

  • What motivates you as a teacher? --> bullet point your motivations

  • What are your views on student assessment? --> bullet point your ideas

  • What does our Mission mean to you? --> bullet point their mission & your ideas

  • Why do you choose our school? --> bullet point your reasons

  • Where do you see yourself in 5 years? --> bullet point your goals

Essentially, take any questions you might struggle with, and lay out some possible answers on colour-coded post-its. Even the act of writing & summarizing your answer on a post-it is a helpful process in preparing your answers. And who knows? You might not even need them!

Could you use a mock zoom interview with an expert? Fortunately, this is one of the many services I offer to my clients. With the Best Value Package, my services include two one-hour video calls: the first call to discuss your new CV and cover letter that I created before our video call, and the second one is booked at a later date when you need extra support in your job search: it might be interview preparation, help with the pros & cons of an offer, or even a sounding board for when you have offers from several schools. I am here to help you!
