Rest to Find Clarity:

Brooke Smith Coaching

October 19, 2023—I was mentally exhausted. The night prior, I'd taught a class for the Wayfinder Life-Coach Training. It was my first time instructing this particular skill set, and the trainees were brand new to the training (this class is the one that launches their entire nine-month learning process). The class was vulnerable and I felt responsible. It went beautifully and by the end of the 90-minute class, they were openly sharing and listening to one another.

The following day, I noticed my mind was on hyper-drive. It's been an interesting week with many moving parts: things happening with my home that is on the market, my new septic installation is going through a transition of its own, and I'm navigating decisions about which direction I want to go with different loans and offers for the future of my next home. These feel like urgent choices! And I want movement (a topic I've been bringing up a lot lately, I know...)!

I sat with these happenings this morning. Meditated on them. Journaled about them. I'm not seeing any problems; just a lot of different options to consider, and possibilities to explore. Which choice will serve me best? I ate lunch and lay in the sun for about an hour. I've learned that when I don't know what is going on or what to do, it's best to rest. I also have faith that everything is right on time and will work out even more magnificently than my measly mind, with all its jumbled thoughts and control issues, could possibly imagine. I listened to a podcast and a half while playing dumb games with lots of blingy lights on my phone. Rest.

Suddenly, I felt it in my body—I was done resting. One moment I was listening to an interesting podcast and the next, I turned it off mid-sentence, got up without thinking, put on my shoes, plugged my phone in to charge, and I went for a walk.

Three blocks into my walk, I bumped into another walker. We landed on the same street corner at the same time. We both turned in the same direction before I realized this was a person who had attended some of my writing groups. As we said our hello's, she asked how my house sale was going. I began to speak, and interrupting me, she offered her experience.

It's moments like these—when everything flows in perfect timing—that I know something bigger is happening. It was odd that we were in the same place at the same time when just moments prior I had been lying on my sofa listening to podcasts and playing video games.

I listened.

As she finished speaking about her own home-buying experience, she ended by saying, "Sometimes you just need to let it breathe." It was exactly what I needed to hear. No choices need to be made right now. And when there is a to-do, I'll take that step—I'll pay the bill, accept the bid, sign the contract—whatever step needs to be made. Those are the parts I know. The rest is in waiting, and yes, out of my control.

Two points were made to me that day:

  1. Rest is essential when things feel uncertain;

  2. Let it breathe (it's out of my hands anyway, so don't force it).
