🦔 If you do one thing this month for wildlife...

 

It feels like spring is finally here. The wettest March in over 40 years has finally yielded to a sunny start to April. Apologies, our 'March update' is late!

 

As the ground warms, creatures are emerging; Queen bumblebees and hedgehogs will be among them. In last month's update, we linked to our article on creating a hedgehog highway - in this month's update, we're recommending it's the one thing you do for wildlife if you can.

 

Creating a hedgehog-sized hole in your fence, hedge, gate or wall will allow them to travel all over the village, stocking up on slugs and snails, and rebuilding their strength after winter.

Have you wondered what’s being created on the edge of the Long Ashton Growers site? It’s a dead hedge! A dead hedge is structure made of dead branches and prunings, but is very much full of life. Our latest blog explains the benefits and how to construct one yourself

🌱 Eyes peeled for... celandines

 

Spring is here and the first celandines and primroses are breaking into flower. Together with lungwort (pulmonaria), both are vital nectar sources for bumblebees emerging from hibernation. Everyone loves bumblebees, so we can't have too many celandines!

🌱 Get involved... Great Avon Wood

 

Avon Needs Trees and Forest of Avon Trust have jointly purchased over 100 acres of land near the village of Pensford. The ambitious plan is to plant and nurture 40,000 trees. They are calling for volunteers and donations.
