PRESIDENT'S REPORT

Hello everyone!

We held our CAAWA annual general meeting on the 6th August at Belmont Potter’s Club. Members were able to attend in person and online.

The past year has been a busy one and I was able to outline some of the activities of our association at the meeting and we thanked retiring committee members. More on the AGM here.

All in all, a busy and productive year and one that highlights the exciting possibilities for ceramics in WA. In this issue of PYRE, we are asking for some help from volunteers in assisting in organizing the ceramics Trienniale. This would be a great way to strengthen your networks and engage with the broader WA ceramics community.

I encourage you to help in any way you can and celebrate the joy that making and appreciating ceramics brings to life!

Best wishes to everyone.

Bernard Kerr, CAAWA President

Empty Bowls 2023

By Contributor: Liz Berry

WOW! Another year with another record breaking event. What an amazing day we had at Christ Church Grammar School for the Empty Bowl Perth Event. Everything flowed so well. We had around 180 people per session who couldn’t wait to get in and choose their favourite bowl from the hundreds laid out before them. It is one of the highlights of this event is watching them select the bowl that resonates with them and brings a smile to their face.

Firstly, Dee and I would like to thank each and every potter in WA who contributed bowls, from all the way up in Broome down to Walpole and Albany. This year we received well over 1000 bowls which allowed us to sell more tickets and more bowls, so thank you.

The total raised this year was an amazing $28,576 which equates to 57,152 meals for West Aussies in need. This is $4,500 more than last year. An incredible achievement.

The main auction pieces that were kindly donated by some of our wonderful potters and artists raised $6,950 and the silent auction was $1,680 with every piece sold.

All the delicious soups were made by Glen Forrest Gourmet, Ultimo Catering, Midland Meals, Whites Mill and Grind, Café Mojo, Teramo Catering, Foodbank and St Mary Anglican Girl’s School.

Bread was donated by Lawleys Nedlands, Barretts Claremont and The Woodfire Baker in Maylands.

And finally, a huge thank you to all the volunteers who without you this event couldn’t happen. From day one where we called on potters to pledge bowls, to collecting bowls from Potter’s Market where Julie kindly allowed us to use as a depot, through to washing and packing bowls and then those who helped on the day.

We have put up photos from the event onto our website emptybowlsperth.com - You might even get to see your bowl amongst them!

Thank you again to everyone.

The Community Kiln

By Contributor: Deanne Sarre

It’s been a while from where it first started to the new location at Antonio Battistessa’s studio in the beautiful Swan Valley. Designs have been many and varied and as of last weekend we now have completed the foundations.

Hallelujah! It looks beautiful to me already.

Adrian Brakovich and Midland Brick have made major contributions of materials to which we are very grateful along with Antonio and his red bricks that need some loving before we can use them.

Mike Moore and Lee Woodcock are brilliant to work alongside as well as Antonio and Lee’s extravagant lunches. The use of Tony on the Bobcat to bring bricks, dirt and clay make a world of difference.

The vision is for us, the community, to be able to fire our pots and learn to fire a wood kiln – something most of us just don’t have the opportunity to do, particularly this close to Perth.

It’s a big, bold and brave project to which I’m stoked to be a part of.

We are looking for helpers every Sunday from 9am. Please join us, it’s a great crew of people – A willingness to help is all we need.

If you are interested in being a part of this great initiative call Lee 0406 350 363 or Dee 0418 942 406. Please bring boots, gloves and a hat.

CAAWA Annual General Meeting recap

The 2023 AGM was hosted by the Belmont Potter's Group on August 6. The meeting was well attended and made available online as well.

Bernard Kerr, our CAAWA President provided a full recap of the years events and progress made on national and international fronts. The Treasurer then gave her report. The election was held, and the 2023 / 2024 Committee confirmed here on our website.

Following the official proceedings, there was an expert panel to discuss and answer questions about the many aspects of exhibiting your work. The esteemed panelists were: Jenny Kerr, Sandra Black and Kate Lindsay. The panel discussion was facilitated by Jeanne Armstrong.

The panelists presented their thoughts on getting your work ready to show, how to select a gallery, preparing supporting and marketing materials, and considerations for the display of your work.

Sandra Black shared her journey as a ceramic artist, including her ups and downs. She also prepared a handout for the audience.

Thanks to all the panelists!

Opportunities

Warrandyte Pottery Expo 2024

It is now time to think about preparing for the 2024 Pottery Expo.

Our guest artists for 2024 will be South Australian ceramic artists represented by the Jam Factory in Adelaide.

I am inviting you to submit your photos and contact information to apply to participate. Please send good photos!!!

Studio potters need to apply online, noting the dates and deadlines given in “Application Information for Exhibitors”.

https://www.potteryexpo.com/apply-for-a-site-2024

As we have more potters than places, unfortunately not all applicants will be able to participate. We have a maximum number of 62 sites and we have been receiving nearly double this number of applications. We may need to consider a rotation of ceramic artists, whereby some may need to miss a year to allow new artists to participate.

Selection will be based on excellence, innovation and variety, as an overview of the best of Australian contemporary studio ceramics. A panel of professional ceramic artists with the organiser will select the exhibitors.

We require 3 high quality images of work intended for exhibition at the Expo, and a current head shot for our website and social media.

Application Information for Exhibitors

Timelines

Deadline for all applications is Friday 20 October 2023.

Applicants will be notified by email, by 10 November  2023, of their acceptance or otherwise.

WEDGE

That which connects us, that which supports us, that which divides us.

By Contributor: Graham Hay

Do you have a free hour here or there?

We’re looking for volunteers!

The CAWAA committee is keen to hear from anyone who has some free time every now and then. You’ll be helping us prepare now for Wedge: the national ceramics conference in a few years' time in Perth.

An indication of the things we’re needing help with right now is

  • advertising and promotion,

  • building lists of exhibition venues, potters and artists to invite,

  • conference tours and accommodation for delegates.

These will then go up on the website immediately.  Other things will need to be done, as we prepare over the months ahead.

You’ll be buddied up with a committee member to provide support and to bounce ideas off.  All help is gratefully appreciated.  Email us at: volunteers@australianceramicstriennale.com.au to join the group of volunteers.

Do share or encourage anyone you know who might enjoy helping.

To keep up to date with all things associated with the Australian Ceramics Triennale, sign up for our mailing list at australianceramicstriennale.com.au
