This annual workday has the primary focus of preparing the camp for the winter camping season. This includes cutting, splitting, and delivering split firewood to the cabins used by Scouts throughout the winter months. Scouters are asked to bring chainsaws, splitters, and appropriate work clothes to work in the woods. (Note: Only trained operators may use chain saws). Pickup trucks and trailers are very helpful to accomplish the cabin wood project. Additionally, we will be continuing the Lookout trail improvement project and starting the winterization process for camp buildings.

Eight Spirit Scholarships Awarded

Since its inception in 1992, the Spirit Scholarship Fund has awarded more than $70,000.  Through 2023,188 awards have been given. The Spirit Scholarship Endowment Fund has grown over the years with an ultimate goal to exceed $150,000 in the funds to perpetually provide Staff Scholarships at Canyon Camp for the foreseeable future.

The funds are used each year to recognize those who most unselfishly have shared their experience, time and skills to make the summer a positive experience for the Scouts, Scouters and Staff members with whom they've worked. At the 2023 Staff Dinner Camp Director Seth Kannarr and Assistant Director Alex Kloepping presented eight scholarships of $650.00 each payable in the Spring Semester:

Spirit of Canyon Camp Scholarship - Samuel Satterlee - St. Norbert's College

Spirit of Canyon Camp Scholarship - Logan Gallagher - University of Wisconsin Baraboo

Troy E. Larson Memorial Scholarship - Troy Papke - Kishwaukee College

Lee I. Binkley Scholarship - Owen Wells - St. Norbert's College

Ron M. Spielman Scholarship - Michael Watson - University of Illinois

Michael E. Beeth Scholarship - Dylan Berry - University of Wisconsin Eau Claire

Gene A. Nott Scholarship - Nicholas Welty - Iowa State University

Scholarship funding comes from staff alumni, Scouters, and Friends of Canyon Camp. Individuals making tax deductible contributions may select prints of pen and ink drawings of Canyon Camp scenes. Artist Elaine Bethke of Monroe has generated ten different prints. If you are interested in supporting the Spirit Scholarship Fund contact Ron Spielman @ 608-325-6490 or spiel335@tds.net
