“We need to give each other the space to grow, to be ourselves, to exercise our diversity. We need to give each other space so that we may both give and receive such beautiful things as ideas, openness, dignity, joy, healing, and inclusion.” - Max De Pree |

The DH Effect Champions of the Month! |
This month we are honoring DHE Champions who exemplify openness in action. Alex Cuilty and Spa Relais |
We could not be more thrilled to honor Alex Cuilty and her Spa Relais team as our The DH Effect Business Champions of the Month in April. Spa Relais is a boutique luxury spa that is the crown jewel of the Westlake Village Inn. From the moment guests walk through the doors and are surrounded by French music, they become immersed in the European lifestyle embracing what the French call “Joi de vivre” translated as “the Joy of Living.” They invite their guests to Relax their mind, Restore their peace and Revive their spirit. Is it any wonder The DH Effect is thrilled to be partnering with them for quarterly spa retreats? |

The Director of Spa and Wellness, Alex Cuilty explains, “My mission of partnering with The DH Effect is to honor the restorative power of self-care on all levels. Spa Relais offers a luxurious and intimate environment where guests allow themselves to be cared for… physically through the touch of a massage and mentally and emotionally through a positivity-driven workshop. My hope is when guests depart, they feel a renewed sense of joy in themselves and in perpetuating the power that joy can bring to others.” It is truly our privilege to work with someone the caliber of Alex Cuilty. In addition to her extensive career in high end hospitality, Alex, along with John Notter, designed, built and developed the Spa Relais brand from day one and considers it to be one of her greatest accomplishments. Of course her marriage to husband, Chris and raising her two phenomenal daughters are pretty darn impressive too! For more information on the retreats with Spa Relais, check out our calendar with links. |

Kelly is a Minnesota-native and mom to a very busy 6-yr old boy. A Minnetonka High School graduate who played on the first girl's varsity hockey team, Kelly was a key leader in leveraging Title IX to support girls hockey at the HS level across MN. In the community, she has been coaching youth hockey in Minnetonka for almost 15 years and most recently had the opportunity to coach her own Mite hockey player. We agree that Kelly is pretty cool! |

By profession, Kelly is doing fractional HR work for local businesses while working full time at Amazon leading Talent Management for their Alexa AI teams across the globe. Her teams help ensure that Alexa users have the best experience possible (thank you!). Having earned her Master’s degree in Industrial Organizational Psychology and being a Six Sigma Master Black Belt, Kelly’s 20+ years of experience in various product, operations and human capital leadership roles with Fortune 50 companies has created the momentum to where she is now, a DH Effect super star! After working with senior leaders at large companies, she took her passion for talent development and business growth and started Level 21 Consulting, LLC. This work allows her to share her expertise with small business owners to ensure they have the internal HR structures to support their employees and growth objectives. When we asked Kelly about her greatest benefit to becoming a DH Effect member, she shared, “I have looked forward to every Monday morning session to frame my intentions for the week. The accountability has been welcomed and the vulnerability from the group to allow for all of us to learn from each other is invaluable.” Kelly, we thank you for your invaluable contribution to our membership and modeling the way of designing a life that honors who you are, whether at home, at work or in the hockey rink. |

Openness is, ironically, a multilayered word. We often think of it as being open to ideas, but there is so much more behind it. We are open with others when we are honest about who we are and what we feel. We are open to others when we listen to understand, instead of listening to be understood. Openness leads us to unity, rather than division. If we are closed to either of the above, we may also be closing ourselves to opportunities, connections, ideas and relationships that may come to us in the most unique ways, but only if we are willing to let go of control and receive life’s treasures. |

Uh oh. I see the crab on the desk. Today is not the day to test Mr. Moynihan. Period. You would think as a sixth grader, having a teacher who would occasionally set out a huge glass globe with a crab inside to signal he was crabby would be scary, maybe even unsafe. Quite the contrary. Mr. Moynihan’s openness on the days that he was struggling made us all feel safer and more compassionate. When we work with any sort of team - family, school staff, corporate - we often hear teammates asking for one thing loud and clear - transparency. Transparency into leadership, as well as the whys and hows of decisions. Often leaders are nervous to be vulnerable with others, and with good reason. There is a delicate balance and discernment that comes with revealing enough to be honest, connected and trustworthy without placing unnecessary burden on others. For Mr. Moynihan, he found just the right way to let us know he was needing a minute without unleashing emotions that were uncharacteristic, and quite frankly, inappropriate for sixth graders to try and handle. What I remember most about this simple open boundary, it gave the rest of us permission to do the same. Mr. Moynihan modeled prioritizing self care, mental fitness and boundaries. His openness was what made us feel safe enough to confide in him when the class was struggling. I will always remember when a classmate had shared with other students that he had a brain tumor, and a group of us asked Mr. Moynihan if we could have a delay with upcoming book reports. He asked what it was, but it was not our story to share. He honored that and respected our wishes as well. Not forcing us to share. Not suspecting we were trying to get away with anything. He just simply extended the very trust he had always asked for. It is crazy to think that Mr. Moynihan introduced this concept over 40 years ago now, and yet the picture of that little crab is in my mind, and even inspired me to create my own little indicators when I was a teacher. Whether it is a symbolic mood indicator, a vulnerable conversation, a system for receiving constructive feedback or a team community agreement, openness is the foundation for trust, and trust is the most important building block for high performance teams at home, school or work. |
