When Is Spring? Depends on Who You Ask

In the Northern Hemisphere, most of us think spring officially begins at the vernal equinox, this year on March 20. However, for meteorologists, spring begins today.  March 1 is meteorological spring. It may not feel that way where you are, but it's a good reason to celebrate, whether March came in like a lion where you live, or a lamb.

Of course, if you live in the Southern Hemisphere, you are moving into autumn.

Happy new season, wherever you are.

History in March

1692 - In Salem Village in the Massachusetts Bay Colony, Sarah Goode, Sarah Osborne, and Tituba, an Indian slave from Barbados, were accused of witchcraft, beginning the Salem Witchcraft Trials. Assuming those convicted were not practicing the dark arts, 19 innocent women and men were killed as a result of the trials.

1837 - The city of Chicago was incorporated.

1921 - Harry Houdini earned a US Patent (#1,370,31) for a safety Diver Suit for his underwater magic escape tricks.

1955 - Elvis Presley appeared on Louisiana Hayride on local television (Shreveport, Louisiana)

1983 - Swatch watches were introduced. I'm still looking to replace my wife's black face, black band, black hands edition.

1989 - Iceland had prohibition until March 1, 1989. The ban had originally prohibited all alcohol, but from 1935 onward only applied to "strong" beer (with an alcohol content of 2.25% or more). Today, Icelanders celebrate Beer Day on March 1 annually.

1990 - In the largest art theft in US history, 12 paintings, collectively worth over $300 million, were stolen from the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum in Boston.

1997 - 'Sir' Paul McCartney was knighted by Queen Elizabeth II for his "services to music."

Author of the Month:

Lis Angus

Every month, I want to highlight favorite authors, whatever their genre.

Toronto-based author, Lis Angus  is a debut author and her first book, Not Your Child, will release on April 18 from The Wild Rose Press. It’s been listed by California-based Film14  as one of the 25 most anticipated Debut Novels of 2022.

Lis and I met virtually a few years ago, when we were both in a critique group. Even though I am no longer part of  that group, we stayed in touch and read each other's manuscripts.  I am so excited to introduce her to you. Her book is available for preorder on Kindle now.

Lis Angus is a Canadian suspense writer. She has always loved reading and writing; by the time she was six, she often sat at the kitchen table writing stories while her mom cooked supper. At age nine, she spent a summer writing a novel —which has long since disappeared—in her cousin’s hayloft.

In Lis' early career she worked with children and families in crisis. In her later career she was a respected telecommunications consultant and policy advisor, conference organizer, business writer and editor. Now retired, she lives south of Ottawa with her husband and has launched a third career as a fiction author. Her short story, A Walk in the Park, is being published in Black Cat Mystery Magazine #11 in 2022. Her debut novel, NOT YOUR CHILD, is also being published in 2022.

She’s a member of Sisters in Crime, International Thriller Writers, Crime Writers of Canada, and Capital Crime Writers, and is an active participant in the North Grenville Writers Circle. In her spare time she loves walking, reading, and watching too much Netflix. And, lately, Wordle.

Ottawa psychologist and single mother Susan Koss discovers that a strange man has been following her twelve-year-old daughter Maddy. She fears he's a predator, but it's worse than that. The man, Daniel Kazan, believes Maddy is his granddaughter, abducted as a baby—and he's obsessed with getting her back.

Susan insists on a DNA test to disprove Daniel's claim, but the result is one she can't understand or explain: it says she's not Maddy's mother.

Then Maddy vanishes. Susan's convinced Daniel has taken her, but he has an alibi, and two searches of his house turn up nothing. The hunt is on—police are on full mobilization, and Susan fears the worst.

At First Sight

Now available in more places

At First Sight is now available on more retail platforms. Check it out.

Reviewers love At First Sight

There was so much to like about this read, I had some tense moments though and I had to draw my Kleenex closer at times as well and boy I had a few good laughs--Heidi, Goodreads

We are treated to a growing romance, an attraction accompanied by plenty of drama and suspense. A true page-turner, you cannot help but cheer for the lead characters as they join forces against what is first a mysterious challenge, and later a very pubic attack on Cress’s professional reputation and personal integrity.--Giselle, Amazon

Have you read At First Sight? If you have, I'd love it if you'd write a review. It doesn't need to be long. Remember, reviews help readers too.

The ebook edition of At First Sight is now available  on Amazon and other retailers and in paperback from Amazon and Barnes and Noble.

You can also order paperbacks from your favorite local bookstore.

Remember, books make great gifts.

I create stories full of romance, suspense, and mystery. Seasoned romance where love has no age limit. Stories that prove second chances can happen, enemies can become friends, and friends can become lovers. Stories that show no two happy endings are the same. And at the core of every story is love.
