Tax free Tuesday

Our mission is to provide space for those seeking hope, comfort and peace as they explore ways of experiencing God’s love.

Dear Friends,

Monday is tax day. If you were getting a return, most likely you have already filed. If you are having to pay, you might be waiting until the last minute with a certain amount of stress.

Tax day also is an enormous stress on those who prepare or help us prepare returns. Perhaps April 15 is also taxing on Internal Revenue Service employees.

Could it be that everyone would like to skip ahead to April 16?

Not to wish away precious time but come Tuesday, we can collectively take some deep breaths and move on. Middleway opens at 10 a.m. Tuesday and peace, comfort and hope awaits you.

Check it out

Many of you have visited our fantastic library with its 1,600-plus volumes you can check out - no due dates and thus no fines.

So here's something we would LOVE: When you bring back a book, write a little review and let us know who you think the book would appeal to most. We'll use that information in this newsletter and keep highlights at the library to help others. Books with reviews will be featured on the top shelf from time to time.

Book Club April

Join us for great conversation on the book Tuesday, April 16, at 6 p.m. Come in person, or join us via zoom. https://us02web.zoom.us/j/85791528587?pwd=UU9EcDRYeFFiaVRmc1lNS2VIdnNhUT09

Also, bring your ideas for other books we might all enjoy discussing in future months.

Are you Done?

Are you “done” with participating in a church, but looking for a place for spiritual community and conversation? Come on Wednesday, April 17, 7-8 p.m. to visit with others who feel the same.

We're gathering a group that seeks to create space for those who would describe themselves as “done” with church, or those who no longer feel at home or accepted in church settings for a variety of reasons but who still want to grow in their faith.

Led by Heidi Campbell, with her husband Troy Shepherd, the group meets monthly. Come help us build a supportive and safe space for spiritual conversations and contemplation with others.

Friday Meditation and Mindfulness

Center yourself and find peace in the midst of your busy life. Friday Meditation and Mindfulness, led by Becky Burks, meets monthly during the noon hour at 12:30 p.m. The next time: Friday, April 19.

Drum Circle for Meditation

The next Drum Circle is Sunday, April 21 at 1 p.m., led by Amy Thompson. Drumming is a way to connect with the rhythm of life and find balance, wholeness and connection. No musical experience is necessary. Percussion instruments are provided.

Chanting the Psalms and

Contemplative Sit

Deepen your spirituality by chanting the psalms. Led by Amy Thompson, this features Anglican and Gregorian chants using Psalms, followed by a 20-minute meditative sit (or centering). The next gathering is Sunday, April 21, 2-3 p.m.

"Setting the Spiritual Woman Free"

An exploration of the spirit-fed source of strong women will be the theme of a retreat May 4, 9-Noon.

Led by Dr. Vivian Dawkins, a spiritual director from Spring, the event will explore ways to discover the links we have to all the Mary's in the bible, and all the Martha's in our world.

Participants will reflect on their strengths as women of God, Dawkins said.

Register for the May event below.

Spiritual directors lend a (holy) ear at Middleway

A team of spiritual companions whose ministry is to listen to you with a holy ear are the backbone of Middleway. One of us can meet with you monthly in a non-judging atmosphere as you discern where God is in your life. We actively listen without trying to "fix" you. It's powerfully healing. See www.middlewayurbanmonastery.org/spiritual-direction. or email us at info@middlewayurbanmonastery.org for more information.

How to experience the monastery

Attend any of our programs for sure. But also know the monastery is also open weekdays Tuesday-Friday and some evenings, Saturdays or Sundays for you to come use the library, art area, or various sitting areas in a relaxing atmosphere where no one will bug you. Children are welcome to come with an adult.

We need you!

Three hours a month, week, or day. Regular or now-and-then. You pick what's convenient for you to volunteer and help welcome others into this peaceful place. We are 100 percent volunteer operated, and you can make a meaningful impact just be being present.

To sign up, please come by the monastery or email info@middlewayurbanmonastery.org.
