LET'S TALK ABOUT MINDFULNESS + TECHNOLOGY

5 Things I'm Free to Do When I Put Technology On Hold

Happy Spring Ya’ll! My family and I were just up in the Central California Coast for a few days at Montana de Oro State Park hiking, tide-pooling, climbing around on rocks and spending some quality time together in the sunshine. It was just what we all needed during this Spring Break week that's ushuring in a new season.

We were very tech-free on our getaway, which was intentional and lead to numerous rich conversations around how to be more mindful of our tech usage. As you've probably experienced, technology can easily get in the way of being present, together, fully focused and intentional with time. Our attention spans are dwindling and while technology is a wonderful thing in so many ways, it’s also deeply distracting in just as many.

We all know this on the surface level, but I’m hearing more and more about tech-free weddings, gatherings, dinners, outings, and entire blackout weeks… imagine!  The article below is such a great read around this very topic- enjoy!

So with this new season approaching, entering into the 2nd quarter of 2023, I challenge myself first and you all as well to just be a bit more mindful with your tech usage. One of the best ways we can all do this is by asking ourselves when we reach for our phone: Is this out of habit or a need? Why am I looking at my phone right now? These two simple questions help raise awareness and ultimately can help us make some simple changes that we are needing to make. 5 things I can do instead of habitually reaching for my phone: 1) stretch, 2) read, 3) walk, 4) organize a drawer/closet, and 5) water plants.  What are your top 5? Send them to me!

I subscribe to Priya Parker's newsletter and recently she shared her thoughts about being intentional with our phones during social gatherings. In the newsletter, she poses 5 questions we can ask ourselves in order to get clear on the role phones play during our gatherings. For example, will having phones at your next event help or hinder the overall experience? She's not saying to ban all technology, just suggesting we think through when having tech-free connection time makes sense.

How Boredom Can Lead to Your Most Brilliant Ideas

My cousin Beth shared a clip from Manoush Zomorodi's Ted Talk (click video below), and it spoke to me and this very idea of being intentional about checking our phones. Turns out, when we check our phones, often it's to distract ourselves from hard work. Therefore, taking a break (even just staring out the window) is more productive and can lead to that breakthrough you've been longing for.

Remember, breaks have been proven to actually increase productivity. Therefore, to help me take screen breaks while working, I use this free Rest Reminder tool. Once you activate the tool, a notice will pop up periodically to remind you to take a little break to rest your eyes, arms and body. It's a great way to practice self-care at work.
