LGBTQ+ Rights & Laws Around the World For LGBTQ+ teachers, world travel and working abroad can be a significant challenge. Many countries still discriminate against people simply for their sexual orientation. Research and preparation has a whole other meaning when failure to do so could mean getting arrested in a country where homosexuality is illegal. Fortunately there's a very helpful crowd-sourced website called https://www.equaldex.com/ where one can select a country to see where it stands on LGBTQ+ rights & laws.

Read on for more info...

Some interesting statistics as found on https://www.equaldex.com/:

  • Iceland is ranked as the most LGBTQ+ friendly country in the world, with Canada at #2;

  • Homosexuality is still illegal in 69 countries;

  • Same-sex marriage is legal & recognized in 52 countries, including more than half of those in South America;

  • In 22 countries, censorship exists to prevent the discussion, teaching, or promoting of LGBTQ+ topics;

  • LGBTQ+ people are protected from discrimination in 80 countries; and

  • Same-sex couples can adopt in 50 countries seeing that number nearly double in the past 10 years.

I want to thank one of my clients for sharing this website with me. I hope you also find it informative when selecting your next travel destination. Very often we can learn about a country's level of tolerance of expatriates, by examining how they treat different groups of people.
