March is Women History Month

“I AM Woman HEAR ME ROAR”

The Australian-born singer Helen Reddy, whose hit "I Am Woman" became a feminist anthem in the 1970’s, which resonated with women worldwide in the midst of the women's liberation movement in the U.S. It became a sensation the same year that the Equal Rights Amendment passed the Senate and when candidate Shirley Chisholm ran for president. The Supreme Court decided Roe v. Wade just a month after "I Am Woman" reached No. 1.

In a 2014, interview with Houston Public Media, Reddy explained that the phrase "I am woman" came to her and just wouldn't leave. "Over and over," she recalled, "'I am strong, I am invincible, I am woman.' And I thought, well, this has to be a song." And the rest is History!

Later on in our Women’s History Timeline, Chaka Khan belted out “I’m Every Woman” remade by the late great Whitney Houston who both graced women with another anthem. The song I'm Every Woman gave women the strength, and courage to wear  all the many hats and wear them well as mothers, wives, daughters, and so on.

Black Girl Magic “She’s Got That Magic”

Generation Z is taking their potion to the new levels. With all eyes on these vicenarians or should I say, “twenty somethings” they are taking us by storm with their talented abilities and hard work that’s paying off. Humblebrag!

Flying High Gymnastic UCLA Gymnasts Margzetta Frazier and Nia Dennis have been flying high with their Floor Routine performances. Nia Dennis’ outstanding floor exercise at a Pac-12 Competition has raised the attention of  more than 10 million views on Twitter. Congratulations to our girl Naomi Osaka,  as she celebrates her 2021 Australian Open. Naomi has resiliently shown her passion for the game of tennis and her strength to take her skill to the next level.  To name a few she  has four Grand Slam titles to her name, adding to the 2018 and 2020 U.S. Opens, plus her win in Australia in 2019. As witnessed She has never failed to lose a major championship final. Kudos to You Ms. Osaka!

This booming prosperous female star athlete is proactive for racial injustice and inequality in the arena in and out of the tennis arena. Ms. Osaka showed her refusal to play in the semifinal match at the Western and  Southern Open in August 2020, to make a stand against police brutality against Black people. Naomi has been proactive to this ongoing issue and believes the lives of Black people are  more important than sports.

AMANDA GORMAN or should I say Poetess Amanda, has ignited us with her eloquent words of wisdom, poise and presence with her performance “The Hill We Climb” at The Inauguration of President Joseph Biden and Madam Vice President Kamala Harris. Thank you First Lady Jill Biden, for inviting Amanda Gorman to the Inauguration Festivities!

Ms. Gorman has definitely taken her stance and made her mark on the world.  All of Social Media has been buzzing about her Inaugural performance, giving her a platform as the Shero Poetess of 2021.  Amanda’s iconic style has crossed over into a contract signing with the IMG Teen Modeling Agency and we’ll be on the lookout for her photo shoot in Teen Vogue. Somehow we can’t get enough and want to see more of her.  A fact about Amanda Gorman was her speech disorder (stuttering) as a child up until college. Amanda's determination and tenacity overcame this speech impediment and now reigns as the first National Youth Poet Laureate. Can we all say, “You Go Girl!”

Do you know the difference? Women’s Rights and Women's Movement

As our society is protesting for what’s right, specifically for social justice, it is important to know the difference between Women's Rights and the Women’s Movement. Some people may say. “It’s all the same,” and perhaps there is validity to this opinion. However, we would like to clarify any lack of knowledge. Simply put here are the definitions...

Women's Rights is defined as the freedoms, liberties and opportunities that women have, especially the opportunity to be treated equal to and given the same legal rights as men. (Your Dictionary.com)

Women’s Movement refers to a series of political campaigns for reforms on issues such as reproductive rights, domestic violence, maternity leave, equal pay, women’s suffrage, sexual harassment, and sexual violence ( lumenlearning.com)

Take your pick on this one, it was hard to choose just one.

Feminism

1. It’s about respecting diverse women’s experiences, identities, knowledge and strengths, and striving to empower all women to realize their full rights.
2. It’s about levelling the playing field between genders, and ensuring that diverse women and girls have the same opportunities in life available to boys and men. (iwda.org)
There you go and your welcome! Now keep fighting and let your voice be heard!

Maya Angelou

Phenomenal Woman

Pretty women wonder where my secret lies.

I'm not cute or built to suit a fashion model's size

But when I start to tell them,

They think I'm telling lies.

I say,

It's in the reach of my arms

The span of my hips,

The stride of my step,

The curl of my lips.

I'm a woman

Phenomenally.

Phenomenal woman,

That's me.

Still I RISE

You may write me down in history
With your bitter, twisted lies,
You may trod me in the very dirt
But still, like dust, I'll rise.

Does my sassiness upset you?
Why are you beset with gloom?
’Cause I walk like I've got oil wells
Pumping in my living room.

Just like moons and like suns,
With the certainty of tides,
Just like hopes springing high,
Still I'll rise.
