Update from Carvers

Hello Woodcarvers. We started back up woodcarving in September. We had a great turnout. It was fun seeing everyone again and hearing about their summer activities. We had a fabulous array of coffee, tea, and desserts to eat while we carvered. See you all in October.

Also just a heads up, we are in the process of hopefully having an instructor fly up this year to give a class. More to follow on that once we get more information together.

Woodworkers Chapter News

August 2024

Woodworkers Club Officers:  President: Sandy McKinnis, Vice President: Larry Holman;

Board Members: Bob Lackey, Lisa Lackey, Greg Lyall, Alan Peck, Bill Poole, Tam Pikey

October 8th Meeting: The monthly meeting will be held Tuesday, October 8th at 7 p.m. in our workshop at the Alaska Industrial Hardware (AIH) store located at 2716 Commercial Drive. Please enter by the door around the back of the building. The main front entrance will be closed since the meeting time is after store hours.

Our presenter for the meeting will be Katie Slack who is the SawStop representative for Alaska.  She will be doing a demonstration of the safety features of the saw and a training in it’s use.  Please join us.  The SawStop demo is totally amazing!!!  Well worth coming to see.

September Monthly Meeting.  Larry Holman was our presenter for the September meeting and shared his tools and expertise in how to do chainsaw milling. He brought his chainsaw with the milling attachment and demoed how it operates.  He shared pictures of prior classes where students milled their own wood and then built beautiful benches.

New Shop Tools:  Our new, long bed, 8-inch Grizzly jointer with helical head has arrived.  It’s currently in two boxes in the shop awaiting assembly.  Jim Powell installed the new helical head for the Dewalt planer.  Tom Landon attached one set of Magport magnetic connectors for the dust collection hoses on the planer, drum sander and table saw.  We also received our new, small dust collection unit for our new sander.  More to come!

Because we now have the helical head in the Dewalt planer we have several sets of knives available. They are under the planer.  First come, first serve.  No charge!  We also have the knife clamps and heads there for the taking!

Shop Clean up: September 22nd from 12-?:  Sandy Mckinns, Greg Lyall, Alan Peck and Tam Pickey came to help for the shop clean up.  We were able to scrub the floor and work benches, vacuum everything, and polish and protect the tables for the Saw Stop, scroll saws and band saws.  Those attending deserve our thanks for getting the shop ready for classes.

Open Shop Program: Woodworking Wednesday: WE NEED SHOP MONITORS for this program.  Please contact: Sandy Mckinnis @ 907-562-3994 if you can help.

The Open Shop Program is now offered every Wednesday from 3 to 8 p.m. Our volunteer shop monitors are excited about the new schedule which increases the opportunities for members to have access to the workshop and the shop monitors will be there to help folks with projects as needed.

Please Note: If you want to use the shop, you need to sign up on the website as we can only have a maximum of 4 students in the shop on each date (https://www.alaskacreativewoodworkersassociation.org/book-online). You will need to indicate your prior woodworking experience, what you are planning to build, what kind of help you need ,and the time you will be there.

If anyone is interested in connecting to the local chess community they should reach out to the Alaska Chess Association. This organization seeks to bring the game of chess to Alaska through over the board meetups and chess tournaments. You can contact Reilly (myself) at AlaskaChessAssociation@gmail.com for more information.

The cribbage board class was taught by Dan Mahoney.  Dan spent many hours learning how to use the Shark CNC Router Engraver in our shop and in designing our cribbage board for it.  The mountain on top of the board is Mt. Susitna! The cards and pegs are stored under the mountain.
