I was in Basel visiting a friend and his family after a stunning few days' walk in the mountains. In the center of Basel I was drawn to the announcement of an exhibition of artists of the Fauvism. A special, short but powerful period in art history, at the beginning of the last century.
I want to show a work that caught my attention because of the special quality and composition of colors. And because it was probably made outside at a rapid pace.
I like to be surprised by the work of an artist who created a subtle interpretation of reality, which is not exactly what it actually was, but has been filtered and pushed in a direction that affected him personally.
Somewhere on the Mediterranean Sea, Alexej von Jawlensky (1864-1941) marvelled at the light and atmospheric conditions of that moment, in that place. The landscape is abstracted and translated into a powerful color palette. More of an emotion and feeling (of him) unfolds within than that temporary reality that was there. So much more valuable than what a photo can convey. As if you enter the artist's emotional world for a moment.
It becomes even more magical for me to think that I am moving with my face and body into the space of the painter at that time. I could come even closer and move my hand over the work... but the sensor went off earlier because I was too close...
Just go and enjoy the spectrum of colours in real if you are in Basel at any chance!
