how can home gardeners celebrate earth day?

let's get personal.

Wonder why we celebrate Earth Day on April 22? It’s the anniversary of the birth of the modern environmental movement in 1970. Thinking globally and acting locally, I did a little “digging” about how we, as individual home gardeners, can take an active role in EARTHDAY.ORG’s Restore Our Earth 2021 campaign and this particular directive on their website, of course, jumped out at me:

“A more sustainable world requires efforts in every aspect of our society and that starts with YOU.“

Digging deeper, one of their recommendations is practicing regenerative agriculture. While there’s lots of information online about this hotter than ever topic, you may enjoy an article I found particularly helpful on 8 ways each of us, in our small corners of the planet, can consider—you guessed it—getting started.

Compost, let weeds do their thing, attract the bird and the bees and practice companion planting are a few I’m excited to have committed to this spring. How ‘bout you?

We (heart emoji) this message from one of our new Starters:

“My seeds are started! I am Alison W., and I am enjoying this journey with your seeds. I have 2 sets of summer squash, beans and cucumbers. I shall go out and check on them now, to see if I need to move them to more shade or sun! This is such a rewarding project, I enjoy growing things for myself and to share with my neighbors, and now to share with neighbors I don’t yet know is lovely, and it's something I can do and share easily, so thank you for the opportunity! Happy gardening!”
