Summer Newsletter 2020

Dear Supporters,

Life at APIE has been unusual to say the least over the last few months. As is the case for so many organisations across the globe, our challenges, opportunities and working practices have been completely reshaped by the coronavirus pandemic.

Schools in Rwanda have been closed since March, and Umubano Academy pupils have been studying at home. Our teaching staff have been delivering remote learning support via WhatsApp, despite not being paid a formal salary for months. Following the closure of Kigali International Airport at the start of lockdown, APIE staff are now scattered, with all of us working from home in various parts of Africa and Europe, and looking after our own children as well whilst schools and childcare facilities remain closed.

But the reaction of our staff, donors and partners to the challenges of lockdown has been heartwarming and inspiring in equal measure. We've had an amazing response to our emergency appeal, enabling us to make hardship payments to Umubano staff, helping them keep their families fed and a roof over their heads. We've been able to continue to support some of the poorest families in our school community, and we've also ensured that both pupils and teachers have the technology, skills and resources to keep learning going despite school closures. We've even continued to train teachers in Rwanda using our online eLearning modules.

In addition to our emergency response, APIE has also installed solar panels on the roof of Umubano Academy to create a free, renewable source of electricity for the school. We've started work on the transformation of the school library, with a generous grant from the Dinan Family Foundation, and we've begun a 5 year partnership with the Lef Pillon Trust to continue to develop our work on Education for Sustainable Peace.

As always, your donations are vital, both for enabling us to provide crucial support to students, teachers and families during the ongoing Covid crisis, and for ensuring that we can continue to plan and deliver projects which support the transformation of teaching and learning in Rwanda. Thank you for your generosity.

I hope you enjoy reading in this newsletter about our projects and the many ways - big and small - that you can make a contribution to APIE's work. You can also learn more about our progress and priorities in our latest Annual Report.

Wishing you and your families all the best in continuing to face the many challenges of life under coronavirus.

SUPPORTING UMUBANO ACADEMY

Delivering education and support through lockdown

On 22 March, Rwanda became the first country in sub-Saharan Africa to implement a total lockdown due to coronavirus. Within days, Umubano Academy had set up a new system of teaching children at home via WhatsApp so pupils could access resources and lessons and parents had the support needed to help their children to learn at home. As well as supporting Umubano with advice on how to deliver online teaching, APIE has also been able to provide technology, food packages and other support to the poorest families in our school community.

Renewable energy comes to Umubano!

Umubano Academy now gets its electricity from the wonderful Rwandan sunshine. Thanks to the generosity of our donors, we have been able to install solar panels on the roof of our school, which is great news for both the planet and the school's pockets! Thank you for helping Umubano take another step towards sustainability.

OUR PARTNERS IN EDUCATION

Working with the Dinan Family Foundation to transform our library

"The only thing you absolutely have to know is the location of the library". So said Albert Einstein and APIE agrees with him! We've begun a new partnership with the Dinan Family Foundation to transform Umubano Academy library into a space that will provide fuel for both learning and the imagination. New software has been installed, and teachers have been working diligently (whilst respecting social distancing measures) to catalogue our entire stock of over 3000 books. Kigali-based architect firm ASA have generously donated plans to transform the library building and we'll be getting custom-made furniture, lots of new books and state-of-the-art computers, all of which will combine to make Umubano's library a place that students never want to leave.

Building peace and promoting inclusion with Lef Pillon

Thanks to a generous multi-year commitment from the Lef Pillon Trust, APIE will be working to develop inclusive education and support for children with additional needs at Umubano Academy. We'll also be enhancing the school's capacity for peace building and developing materials to support and evaluate the impact of Education for Peace across Rwanda. A quarter of a century after the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi, we hope this work will make a vital contribution to ensuring lasting peace and stability in Rwanda.

Partnering with UK schools to improve education in Rwanda

We're delighted that two UK schools - Benenden in Kent and St Philip's in Surrey - have committed to fundraising for APIE in the next academic year. We hope that these partnerships will also be an opportunity for UK students to learn more about the wonderful country of Rwanda and be inspired by our vision of a world in which all children everywhere receive a quality education.

HOW YOU CAN SUPPORT US

Every time you shop online you could raise FREE money for APIE! It takes 2 minutes to sign up to Give As You Live and then every time you shop online, a percentage of your spend is turned into a donation to APIE. If all our supporters take a few minutes to sign up to Give As You Live, we could raise enough over the course of a year to fund a scholarship place for one of Rwanda's poorest children.

Sign up today to help make quality education in Rwanda a reality every time you shop on Amazon. AmazonSmile  has the same products and prices as Amazon.co.uk. but they will donate 0.5% of every purchase price to APIE.

Save the date!

APIE will be taking part in this year's Big Give Christmas Challenge - the UK’s biggest match funding campaign. For 7 days, from 1st to 8th December, our supporters will have their  donation doubled. Watch this space for more details of how you can give Rwandan children the gift of quality education this Christmas.

Your support is what allows our work to continue. If you'd like to get involved in any of our projects, please reach out to us at hannah@apartnerineducation.org. If you'd like to donate, please follow the link below. Thank you.
