This piece has been beautifully framed by the legendary Detail Framing Studio, Edinburgh. Jamie says of his craftsmanship; "We hand painted the inside and out of the frame in a hand mixed colour and we then silvered the top edge of the tray frame, a traditional style applied in a contemporary way!"

In order to celebrate the centenary, and indulge myself, I have rummaged through the archive, and unearthed these images from previous VAS exhibitions in which my work has appeared.

The first VAS appearance was during 2019, in 'Alight', at the Royal Scottish Academy. There are many great reasons to submit work for exhibitions such as this, including the opportunity to exhibit in what must surely be the best large exhibition space in Scotland, and appearing alongside some seriously good artists. In the photo above, my ink and pastel work Uncontainable Night is on the right, and the far left is home to a painting by Julie Ann Simpson, whose work I really admire.

It might be worth noting that membership exhibitions such as this are not usually 'pay to display', in the sense that simply by virtue of paying a membership fee one gets to appear in the exhibition. In fact, it can be quite the opposite, as they are often open to non-members, and there is always a very thorough selection process for each artwork to pass through, with a large volume of submissions vying for space on the walls.

This small ink, pastel, and pencil drawing was also nearby. In the time since the show both have flown the nest, with this piece (Night Sea Crossing) heading to the USA, and the one above making its way to Australia.

Straddling the end of 2019 and beginning of 2020 was this joint VAS and Society of Scottish Artists exhibition, at the RSA. It was a great pleasure to be nearby a beautiful Barry McGlashan painting, furthest to the right. My piece on the left is The Pathless Path, an ink and pastel image, which probably took longer to complete than anything else I have made to date.

A little later in 2020 two small acrylic and ink on paper works were selected for the VAS stand at the Borders Art Fair, in Kelso. I used to love visiting the town, and walking in that part of the Scottish Borders, so it was an honour to be alongside one of my favourite artists in Scotland, Andrew MacKenzie. Himself a Borders dweller, an exhibition of Andrew's work opens in March at &Gallery, on Edinburgh's Dundas Street, which I would highly recommend visiting if you're in the area.

The era of online exhibitions begins. I cannot recall what work appeared in Flow, but I do remember getting a mention (quite literally my name, next to the word 'landscape') in the Times. I'll take it!

A strong contender for the title of 'my most bitter-sweet art experience' was having these two images selected for the 2022 VAS Annual at the RSA, sending them north to be expertly framed, only for Covid to strike. The exhibition, Reverb, eventually took place in an online format, and whilst in many ways a success, testament to a lot of hard work by the organisers, it occurred at a moment in time when everyone was thoroughly tired of online exhibitions. You can read about the series of works and the inspiration behind them in this newsletter.

And most recently, during December 2022 was North, held at Inverness Creative Academy. The significance of this particular piece is that it was the first painting (with no drawing elements) of mine to be exhibited. Below left is a great example of Nicola Wiltshire's very intriguing and unique style, and below to the right my good friend, and future Masterchef champion, Adrian Gardner.

Thanks for reading. See you next time.
