An Interview with Daniel Banks, PhD

Co-Convener & Board Chair of Transform 1012

Co-Founder & Co-Director of DNAWORKS

How did Transform 1012 originate?

In researching the history of racial terror lynching in N. Texas, Adam W. McKinney (Co-Founder of DNAWORKS) learned that the Ku Klux Klan Auditorium at 1012 N. Main Street was still standing. At the time, we lived just under 3 miles from there and were, of course, shocked. And we had the same immediate response – it needs to become a center for arts and community healing. We embarked on this journey by speaking with as many people locally as we could – and the first few people with whom we discussed the project were Councilmember Carlos Flores (since the building is in his district) and Dr. Opal Lee. We began formulating a plan for the project to be led by a coalition of organizations all representing and/or serving the constituencies targeted by the KKK in the 1920s. Once that coalition formed, we met for almost two years to explore the viability of the project before applying for and receiving our non-profit status.

What does DNAWORKS do?

DNAWORKS is a Fort Worth, Texas-based arts and service organization dedicated to dialogue and healing through the arts. Founded in 2006 by Adam W. McKinney and me, DNAWORKS centers Global Majority and LGBTQQ2SPIAA+ voices to create more complex representations of identity, culture, class, and heritage in dance, theatre, film, writing, and art installation.

DNAWORKS has led its award-winning programming and performances, promoting dialogue-based social justice action and community building, with arts, educational, and community organizations in thirty-eight states and seventeen countries. DNAWORKS believes that art = ritual = healing = community and that this philosophy and practice lead to a more peaceful world.

What is the connection between DNAWORKS and Transform 1012?

With the support and guidance of numerous community partners, DNAWORKS convened the 1012 Leadership Coalition, which became the Founding Board once we received our 501(c)(3) status. In a sense, DNAWORKS incubated this project by receiving grants before Transform 1012 was an official organization, engaging DNAWORKS resources and subscriptions towards the early stages of meeting and development, and introducing our devised, ensemble theatre approach to community organizing.

What would you like to for the future of The Fred Rouse Center?

A vibrant cultural hub where ALL Fort Worth is welcome. A building and programming that has something for everyone, where we can learn about one another’s cultures and appreciate our similarities and celebrate our differences. A home-base where one can stop in at any time of the day, find people with similar values of community, and always feel at home, whether seeing a performance or an art show, meeting a friend or a client, attending a community celebration, learning how to use a tool to make or fix something for/in your home, hanging out at the outdoor urban agricultural and artisans market, or taking a class. We want this to be the place where people want to be. As Yavilah McCoy, a friend and mentor of Adam's and mine, says – we are “creating a space for people to fall in love with one another.”
