Saying Goodbye to One of the Oldest Businesses in Town

Adams Hardware to Close

July 2022 - The month of July marks the end of an era in Sturgis. After 78 years serving our community Adams Hardware is closing its doors at the end of the month.

Sturgis and the surrounding communities have been blessed over the last 78 years to have Walter Turner and his family hardware store as a staple in our town. Whether you were looking for a special part or wanted to visit over parched peanuts and watch the cars go by the hardware store had it all and for that we are eternally grateful.

Walter has been faithful to the Sturgis community serving his customers Monday - Saturday 7:00am - 5:00pm every day, except Wednesday when he closed at noon. In addition to running the hardware store Walter also served as Mayor of Sturgis from 2008 - 2017.

After all those years and hours of service to our community Walter's retirement is well deserved. We wish him well, thank him for his contributions and service, and hope he enjoys his next chapter.

History of Adams Hardware

February 14, 1944, Mr. Marvin "Dog" Adams bought the Morgan garage building from J. G. Quinn for a hardware store. Prior to Mr. Adams taking ownership the building was being rented by E.M. Rhodes.

Mr. Adams and his wife, Nannie, worked diligently building the successful venture. They sold anything needed in the hardware line and had quite a display of toys at Christmas time. Their son, Clark "Pup" Adams, was also very helpful with the store. At first he worked part time in the post office, but after Mr. Adams' health began to fail he quit there and worked full time in the family business with the exception of some work on his farm.

Clark assumed ownership May 23, 1961 and he and Mrs. Adams carried it on in the customary way. Walter Turner, the nephew of Clark, returned to his family's home town of Sturgis and took ownership of the hardware store March 4, 1987.

Mr. Adams was a Master Mason and served as Worshipful Master a number of years in the Sturgis Lodge. He served as Steward in the Methodist Church. He was also an avid sportsman and kept so many fox hounds he was know around the community as "Dog" Adams.

All three men were veterans of the military. Mr. Adams served in WWI, Clark served in the Navy during WWII, and Walter also served in the Navy.

Summer at the Library

Summer 2022- The Sturgis Library has been busy this summer. Our children have had the opportunity to experience new things each week from our guest visitors. With visits from birds, mammals, and reptiles our kids have had learned a lot! They also enjoyed a special magic act! It has been a fun summer at the library and we look forward to learning at our library for years to come!

Celebrating Fourth of July

The Fourth of July has come to stand for a time spent with family eating hotdogs, swimming, and closing the night with fireworks.   People often plan their family vacation around this time making it one of the most travelled holidays in America. While we all love a good hotdog and a long weekend with those we love, we need to remember why we are able to enjoy these moments with those who mean the most.

July 4, 1776. This was the day of our nation's birth. After years of conflict and sacrifice, our brave men and women won the war. The Declaration of Independence was signed and the United States of America was born. Since then, our country has seen ups and downs. Throughout it all we have stood proud as American citizens.

The neighbors of the Sturgis community have been faithful to our country serving in all conflicts and wars since we began. Many of the young men and women sacrificing their original life plans to ensure those who would come after would have every opportunity desired. We could not be more proud of our ancestors and our current family and friends who have and are serving our country! They have allowed us to live in the greatest country and enjoy the benefits of their sacrifices.

Thank you to all our members of the U.S. Armed Forces!

Fun Fact:  Mississippi has a lot of towns with honorary “Capital” titles. For example, Greenwood is considered the Cotton Capital, Vardaman is known as the Sweet Potato Capital, and Belzoni is nicknamed as the Catfish Capital of the World.
