Despite COVID, the four technology developers in ENCORE made excellent progress in the past months. A short update of what has been achieved:
Water2Energy deployed their vertical axis turbine at the discharge gate in the Port of Flushing (The Netherlands) in October. Commissioning and testing are now underway.
Teamwork Technology completed a dry-testing campaign of the Symphony Wave Power, a submerged point absorbing wave energy system, in the port town of Sines in Portugal. The set-up was dismantled and brought to the Netherlands for further expansion and testing in 2022. In addition, Teamwork Technology attracted investment from Dutch Multimetaal based in Den Helder.
Oceans of Energy are preparing a doubling of their 50 kW pilot with offshore floating solar modules at the North Sea Innovation Lab. The system survived several storms throughout 2021 validating that the system can work in harsh environments.
EEL Energy operate a test version of the EEL Tidal Energy Converter at the nuclear power station near Dunkirk, France, tapping energy from the outflow of cooling water. A phase of intensive testing will start in December 2021. Also a design for a floating solution is on the drawing table. The full-scale system is planned for deployment in 2022.
Service providers Bureau Veritas, Artelia, Inyanga Marine Projects, Bluespring, DMEC, EMEC and Ghent University jointly support the technology developers with certification activities, performance assessment, simulation and modelling, risk reduction and attracting finance for roll-out.
Deftiq and Bluespring use the know-how obtained through the ENCORE project to develop a series of e-learning courses to train anyone pursuing a career in the emerging industry. The first module "Introduction to Offshore Renewable Energy" is available. Over 200 registered users across Europe, Latin America and the US have already tried the course. Interested as well?
