Hi everyone, I hope you've had a great week. Here's the run-down of mine! |

A special announcement...In this week's video, I made a very special announcement. I'm creating an online course! There is a lack of simple, straightforward, practical advice on the internet to score highly in Section 2 and I felt this when I was preparing for my GAMSAT in March. So, I thought I'd create exactly that. The course will tell you everything you need to know and do to get 80 (top 0.7%) in Section 2 of the GAMSAT. No questions asked. Just direct, approachable, understandable advice to make things easier for you. The pre-sale for the course will launch next week. Get in early for a special early bird discount! |

Since this is the first edition of the newsletter featuring this column (I'm calling it a column because then it sounds like I'm editor-in-chief of a magazine), I thought I'd start us off with something simple (well, relatively). A lot of us talk about capitalism as if we know what it is. People throw around statements blaming all the bad stuff in the world like poverty, homelessness, inequality, racism on capitalism (and so we should). But, I often find that many people don't actually know how capitalism works and what that means for citizens living within a capitalist society. We know that "capitalism is an economic system based on the private ownership on the means of production and their operation of profit", but what are the types, characteristics, pros and cons, myths, failures, and countries of capitalism? If you were asked to write an essay about a specific facet of capitalism right now, would you be able to create a nuanced response to it? Or would you find that you actually know less than you think you do? If your answer is the latter (and don't worry – mine is too), then dig a little deeper into the complex ideology that is capitalism. You will be able to use what you learn in every essay that you write, Task A or B. Because capitalism influences everything. For those of us living in a capitalist society, it dictates all of our actions, thoughts, and ideas of reality. So you'd be silly not to include it in your essays. |

Is Capitalism a Threat to Democracy? In London, in the nineteen-thirties, the émigré Hungarian intellectual Karl Polanyi was known among his friends as "the apocalyptic chap." His gloom was understandable. Nearly fifty, he'd had to leave his wife, daughter, and mother behind in Vienna shortly after Austria lurched toward fascism, in 1933. |

My recommendation for the week: |

Book: Beloved, Tony Morrison I binge read this book this week. Admittedly it was for a uni assignment, but it was extraordinary neverthless. Morrison explores the trauma experienced by Sethe, an ex-slave, and her family, following the civil war. At times, it is gut-wrenching and hard to digest, but it is clearly a very important book. Morrison gives a voice to many whose voices were otherwise lost. Get a copy for yourself |

A moment of joy I had this week: |
|
|
My 15km run! In preparation for my upcoming half marathon (which I'll now be running on the 17th of October!) I embarked on a 15km run along the foreshore of Sydney Harbour. The views were spectacular and the runner's high I experienced was such a rush. Plus, it was a PB for me for both distance and pace! |

Hope you guys have a wonderful week and see you next Sunday. Kate :) |
