Founded in 2021, New England Young Fishermen’s Alliance (NEYFA) has been a conceptual work in progress since 2017, catalyzed in 2019 when NH Community Seafood, NH Food Alliance, and NH Sea Grant held three “focus groups” called Dock Talks: Next Generation around the NH Seacoast, including commercial fishermen from a variety of fisheries from southern Maine, NH, and northern Massachusetts. Based on the responses from those focus groups and countless conversations with young commercial fishermen, NEYFA formed a 3-year grant funded by the USDA, FMPP grant program in cooperation with Yankee Fishermen’s Cooperative, the administrator of the grant. |
Our Mission Our mission is to empower the next generation in our local commercial fishing industry by providing critical networking, training, and resources. Through values-based initiatives, we plan to preserve, protect, and promote the future of our small boat fishing businesses in northern New England. |

DTC Training Update August, 2023 |
July classes were all about state and federal regulations and how to reach to right person for the permit and licensing process in your state! On July 10 we had state regulators Renee Zobel, from NH Fish and Game, Matthew Sinclair from Department of Marine Resources, Maine and Kerry Allard from Department of Marine Fisheries, Mass come speak to our DTC trainees about state regulations and policy. On July 24, we had NOAA/GARFO Spencer Talmage come talk about the NOAA Marine Fisheries hierarchy and the Magnusson Stevens Act and the very complex system of how our fisheries in the US are regulated and managed. Then we had one of our 3 reps on the New England Fisheries Management Council (NEFMC), Peter Whelan come speak about the Council process, the Atlantic States Marine Fisheries Commission and how important it is for young fishermen and women to get involved with their fisheries rule making, by attending Council meetings. That said, the next NEFMC meeting is September 25-28 in Plymouth, Mass. More info in September's newsletter on that! In late June, we had Boston Globe reporter, Amanda Gokee come to our DTC class and interview trainees Anthony Smith and Nicole Fel Dotto. You can see that article below... |

BOEM MEETING UPDATE New England Young Fishermen's Alliance (NEYFA) was fully represented at the latest BOEM meeting, held on July 27 in NH for the fishing industry. We are adamantly opposed to offshore wind in our Gulf of Maine! It is extremely important for young fishermen and women to show up at these meetings! When policy is in the beginning stages, that is when you have the most impact on what will happen! Keep up with what is going on by following us on FB and IG! Your voice matters and if you don't want offshore wind in your fishing grounds, you have to show up and voice your opinion! There is true power in numbers and it is your responsibility to advocate for your industry, because that is how the system is set up! |

NEFSA Save our Fisheries Fundraiser |

NEFSA held a fundraiser in Maine to raise funds in support of the New England fisheries. They served delicious food and played music to bring together the community of fishermen, women, and families to support and defend their livelihood. We were a co-sponsor of the event, over 50 local businesses and stakeholders sponsored the event! Keep up with NEFSA on their campaign #fightsalty working against the offshore wind developments. |

Yankee Fisherman's Cooperative Summerfest On June 25 we were at YFC's Summerfest helping out and having fun. This event will become an annual occasion! It is family-friendly and a great opportunity for the public to see what is happening at one of the last cooperatives for both groundfish and lobster left in the northeast. We appreciate everything YFC does for our local fishing industry and for agreeing to be the Administrator of our USDA grant that got us started. Live 80s music happened all day, with GM of YFC, Tim Noonan on lead vocals! We also had a cornhole tournament, food, and lots of fun! All proceeds were donated to local charities. | | |
