ACES AND PLACES

• Congratulations to our Junior MVPs from the summer season Madhavi Shrivastava and Hunter Kwietniewski-Lees. Keep up the great work!

Best of luck guys!

• Gill Ashley and Trish Haffenden swapped their rackets for golf clubs for a weekend on the Green at Rotto. Peter Bierwirth has been holidaying in Thailand and Arnold Jones has just returned from a caravan trip to the Eastern States.

• Keith Begley took out second prize in the recent Manning Tennis Club Championships.

• The Bunbury Teams Tournament was recent host to HPTC women Julie Strack, Katrina Chisholm, Anna Kelly, Veronica Burns, Rhoda Napier and Lynnette Gardiner. • Thanks to Webb & Brown-Neaves for their ex-gratia payment to the Club for the use of our fence behind Court 13 to display their company banner.

• Our resident Djidi-djidi, Walter, has been hanging out and causing chaos in the clubrooms as usual. The Sunday Night Doubles Team got a bit of cross training in this week trying to

PRESTON STREET IGA JUNIOR TOURNAMENT

The weather was wonderful, the energy was electric and the snags were sizzling as Hensman held the annual Preston St IGA Junior Tournament again in April.

The tournament was a huge success with everyone involved having a great time competing in, and watching matches played both here at the Club and at Wesley College.

Winners and Runners Up from HPTC included Elana Manoj, Darshyn Mannar, Mayla Manoj, Toma Terasawa, Elijay Lui, Khristian Bacchelli-Khoo and Brendan Chan.

Huge thanks to our 40 volunteers on the day who made the tournament run so smoothly, and to Jan Budden (Tournament Director), Jill Sheridan (Tournament Referee) and Trish Haffenden (Canteen) for your hard work before and at the event.

A very special thankyou to Ken McIntosh for coordinating and facilitating another successful event for the Club!

How the numbers stacked up:

441 matches

612 balls used

202 players

19 events

46 trophies and prizes

4 days

2 locations

12 officials

386km driven to get to the comp (from Albany!)

LIFE MEMBERS DAY

Thanks to everyone who helped out and/or came down to the Club to celebrate our Life Members in April.

A sunny day of 8-Set, Fast 4 Mixed Doubles culminated in Pari Chandra taking home the major prize!

It was a fabulous event organised to perfection by Pam Gardiner. Thanks Pam!

Special mentions to June Rundle for all her help with the event (especially those delicious sausage rolls and sandwiches!) and to David Hassett & Joan Campbell for slaving away in the kitchen on the day.

Team HPTC!

VERTI-MOWING OUR LAWNS

The first of our two verti-mowing sessions for the Winter happened in early May.

With some of the best grass courts in WA, it takes a lot of work to keep them in such great condition. Brendan, our resident grass-whisperer, has been taking great care of the courts to ensure a smooth, fast and consistent surface for next Summer's season of play!

WHAT HAPPENS TO OLD TENNIS BALLS?

Well, we prevent them from going into landfill through the Game On Recycling program where they get turned into flooring, soft fall matting and underlay, but a few lucky balls go to Maddie, our local Tennis Loving Pooch.

Maddie and her Dad, Ron, pop in now and again to restock her well-loved and well-chewed collection!

 MEMBER PROFILE

ANJA DOKIC

Hello! I'm Anja and you will know me as the Captain of the Hensman Park Women's State League team, and one of the coaches for Team Tennis WA.

I started playing tennis at the age of 8 and have been coached by Mark Leuba for most of my life. Mark coached me to 4 Australian National Championship Titles in my Junior playing career.

When I finished high-school I went to the US to play tennis at college which was a fantastic experience. I've also had the privilege of travelling with the Australian National Team on multiple occasions for tournaments around the world.

Being a part of the Women's State League team is great and I really love seeing the younger girls coming in and achieving incredible things on the court!

I have been coaching at Hensman Park for about 4 years now. This Club is like my second home because I'm always here!

When I'm not on the courts you can find me hanging out with my Golden Retriever Henry or working towards my Bachelor of Education at uni.

"I have known Anja since she was 8 years old and have enjoyed watching her progress from an aspiring Junior, through many National Titles and overseas tournaments, to Women's State League Captain. I am so proud of the dedicated, reliable, committed and hardworking woman she is today.'

Trish Haffenden - Women's State League Manager
