The 2023 Louisiana Region VI Science and Engineering Fair Awards Showcase, held March 1, 2023 at the UL Lafayette Student Union Ball Room, was a huge success. Congratulations to all winners in each category! Special thanks to C. H. Fenstermaker & Associates, The Climate initiative, and CGI Technologies and Solutions. Also, thank you to all educational and community partners that made it memorable.

Student Spotlight 🎉

Kolby Courville, a student at Port Barre High School, created this digital image for Black History Month using a programming language. His work was featured on the front page of brbytes.org. He is among the participants in a project designed to support a pathway of computational thinking and computer science for 7-12th grade students.

Partner Spotlight 🎉

Dr. Heather Stone, an associate professor in the UL Lafayette College of Education & Human Development, was recently featured in the “Isle of Memories: Stories of the Biloxi-Chitimacha-Choctaw” film supported by The National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine.

“Isle of Memories” is based on Dr. Stone’s six-year collaboration with residents of Isle de Jean Charles, a tiny island in Terrebonne Parish, La, to document and preserve their culture that has been affected by coastal erosion.

AviNation American Dream Tour was in Lafayette, LA at David Thibodaux STEM Magnet Academy. “The AviNation mission is to attract, educate, and empower diverse youth in aviation/aerospace throughout the United States. Thanks to all who made this event a success! 

FREE Wind & Solar Energy Workshop for Educators

KidWind, in partnership with Region 4 STEM Network Center, UL Lafayette Center for Excellence in Education, and UL Lafayette Solar Lab is offering a FREE 6-hour workshop to explore the science and technology of solar and wind energy. This energy-based content workshop is designed to be easily integrated into classroom activities.

FREE Educator Training - SeaPerch

 

The Region 4 STEM Network Center and UL Lafayette Center for Excellence in Education are partnering with Robonation to provide training for the SeaPerch underwater robotics program.

 

Through a DSEC grant, Robonation is also providing student kits at no cost to trained teachers who plan to use Seaperch in their classroom, after school, or during summer enrichment.

ASM Materials Education Foundation is offering a FREE professional development opportunity for teachers.

The prestigious GMiS Scholars Program is now accepting STEM scholarship applications for the 2023-2024 academic year!

Scholarships are available for traditionally underserved and underrepresented students, especially Hispanic, who are graduating high school seniors, undergraduate students and graduate students pursuing a STEM or health-related field of study at an accredited 2-year or 4-year college/university in the U.S. or Puerto Rico.
