Minutes from October 12, 2022 Meeting of Tree City Quilters Guild
1. Trish Everitt opened meeting by welcoming 3 visitors (Kay Hurst, Caroline Caton, and Carlene Harmon), who were introduced by Tammy Clark. Thirty-seven members were also present.
2. Old Business
a. The September minutes were approved. First and second motions to approve were made by Betty Sue Vincent and Susan Boyd, respectively.
b. The September Treasurer’s report was approved. First and second motions to approve were made by Peggy Bessinger and Susan Boyd, respectively.
3. Committee Reports
a. Sharon Fuentes for Charity:
i. Members were invited to view 3 “silent auction” quilts. Bids will be accepted until the guild Christmas party, at which time the quilts will be awarded to the winning bidders.
ii. Melanie Jensen was thanked for binding a sampler quilt previously shown at the September meeting.
iii. Tables with charity kits and newly completed charity quilts were available.
b. Vicky Bergath for Outreach:
i. Food and monetary donations were accepted for Bread of the Mighty, the local food bank.
ii. Copies of a list were available, which included contact information of legitimate as well as fraudulent sites responding to hurricane victims, and phone numbers for reporting fraudulent activity.
c. Linda McSwain for Retreat:
i. Set up for retreat will be 6:00 pm Wednesday, October 19.
ii. Times for retreat will be 9 am until 9 pm, Friday, and 9 am until 7 pm, Saturday.
iii. In addition to the round tables, a limited number of rectangular tables are available to borrow from Grace Baptist Church. Members were invited to bring tables.
iv. Long extension cords and power strips are needed.
v. Workshop activities consist of mini-sessions. Those concerning the construction of the basic “Christmas Ribbons” block and sashing include instructions for making: 4 flying geese at a time (Sandy Pozzetta); the “perfect” ¼ inch seam (Marsha Tucker); block construction (Linda McSwain); sashing (Cathy McVay); and a novel pinwheel (Sharon Fuentes). Sandy Pozzetta suggested that members bring extra fabric to practice making the flying geese. A session on
making a carpet bag tote will be provided by Jan Fenniman.
vi. Fred Peltcs will be available on Friday for sharpening of scissors, rotary cutter blades and knives.
4. Announcements:
a. Jackie Reichardt is selling raffle tickets ($1 each or 6 tickets for $5) for the charity auction quilt. Winning ticket will be drawn at retreat.
b. Anne Mullis asked members to complete and return survey sheets concerning future projects and challenges.
c. Betty Sue Vincent asked that members avoid parking in the “pick-up and drop-off” spot located at the southeast corner of the building.
d. Radha Selvester reminded members of the new location for the local Days for Girls and their Hospice Memory Bears project.
5. Program: Donna York (MSN, RN, TCRN) presented ways that lay people could make a difference in the survival of cardiac arrest victims. At the outset of her presentation, Donna shared statistics, which underscored the importance of prompt and proper bystander responses to these victims. Donna also covered details of “need-to-know” information, which included proper administration of CPR (Cardiopulmonary resuscitation), and use of an AED (Automated
external defibrillator).
6. Door prizes were won by Melanie Jensen and Mary Short.
