Price Hill Will Newsletter (No. 56)

Buzz into June with the Brood of Price Hill

As we begin to count our cicada sightings, lets visit the definition of brood:

/bro͞od/ noun: the young of an animal or a family of young

It maybe a stretch, we like to see some of our programs and events as have broods of their own this summer! Programs like Let's Get Physical kicking off a new sample of summer classes, or ARCO playing host to multiple summer camps.

Tired of hearing the word brood? Well ok. Then you can just stick with update instead!

This month's newsletter contains announces our ARCO Grand Opening, introduces a new key member to the Price Hill Will staff, celebrates our MYCincinnati students past and present, and embraces the outdoors with the Let's Get Physical and the Passport to Healthy Living!

Goodbye and Goodluck Laura!

A bittersweet goodbye to our longtime intern, Laura Castillo. Laura began working for Price Hill Will in early 2020 right before the pandemic. Despite an unusual onboarding process thanks to COVID, Laura overcame those challenges and became an integral part of the Price Hill Will team. Laura helped us organize our 2021 strategic planning process, organized and facilitated community meetings around the CG&E Commons, created case study materials for our Homesteading program, the list goes on. Laura has done it all! Laura graduated from Xavier University this past semester with her Master in Urban Planning and has accepted the role of Research and Advocacy Coordinator at HOME. We wish Laura the best of luck in her next endeavor!

Welcome New Interns!

We are thrilled to welcome several new interns this summer. Brianna, Genevieve, and Jasmine will be joining Sam and the Community Engagement team and Jack, Brad, and Lauren will be joining Tifani and the Marketing/ARCO team. All students are studying at the University of Cincinnati majoring in a multitude of areas; from Marketing to International Affairs to Community Planning.

REAL ESTATE

YSOTQC one step closer to opening

We're thrilled to share that the neighbor-led nonprofit Your Store of the Queen City officially completed its tenant fit-out construction phase of Meiser's Fresh Grocery & Deli in May, and we will be installing furniture and equipment during the month of June. Our goal is to complete inspections in late July so that we can get these grocery doors open for a soft-opening of shopping as soon as possible--and we're almost there! To make donations that will help run and stock the store with good food, as well as helping to hire neighbors, please visit the link below.

Homesteading Serves 13th Family!

The thirteenth family in the Price Hill Will homesteading program will be moving into a home on Manss Avenue in early June. They have made multiple interior improvements including finishing the upper level for 2 additional bedrooms and framing out for a master bath on the first level. Amazing sweat equity has already gone into this home! The house that PHW purchased in April on Akochia Court is almost complete and ready for the next available family. There is an approved candidate family that started the application process in 2019. This former rental property is a 4 bedroom with a large lot and a large detached workshop/storage building. Converting a rental property to an owner-occupied home is always a success story for the neighborhood! 2605 Ring Place remains under construction with the majority of the exterior complete. This home should be ready for a family this Fall in time for Autumn color in the large wooded lot. As always, we are searching for more good houses for the program. Do you know or own a home that could be a candidate for our program? Email our real estate team! jay@pricehillwill.org or jim@pricehillwill.org

The MYCincinnati family has two class of 2021 graduates! Congratulations Sya and Vanessa!

Sya joined MYCincinnati nearly 10 years ago, at the age of 7. After playing the violin for several years, she took a brief hiatus from the program, and then rejoined again in 2018 playing the flute and eventually switching permanently to the oboe. Sya finished high school a year early and graduated from Dater High School where she was also a member of the band and jazz bands. She was a recipient of the Carlson-Berne Scholarship through which she was able to take private oboe lessons. Sya will be attending Northern Kentucky University where she plans to major in Biology and minor in Spanish.

Vanessa joined MYCincinnati in 2018, first playing the flute and soon transitioning permanently to the oboe. Vanessa also played the oboe in the band at Walnut Hills High School where she also took private oboe lessons. Outside of music, Vanessa was a talented rugby player on the Girls Varsity Rugby Team at Walnut Hills High School. Vanessa will be attending University of Cincinnati and plans to major in nursing and also minor in Spanish.
