IN THE NEWS | ConvergenceRI

ConvergenceRI published a story, “Bridge over troubled waters; data on teen suicide in RI,” which explored the most recent data around suicides in Rhode Island for children under 18 for 2019 and 2020, looking at the kinds of interventions and preventions that were occurring in response to the mental health stresses and demands precipitated by the social isolation conditions imposed by the pandemic. ConvergenceRI had reached out to a number of sources, including the Chariho Youth Task Force, in order to get as broad as perspective as possible on how best to frame the conversation.

South County Regional Coalition Update

Rhode Island Student Assistance Services is pleased to present, Emerging Trends in Youth Vaping: What Schools Need to Know, a 7-module, self-paced e-training developed for educators, Student Assistance Counselors,

administrators, prevention specialists, and parents.

We are at risk of erasing all of the progress we have made in eradicating youth tobacco use.  According to the Youth Risk Behavior Study in 2019, 30% of our high school students are using an electronic vapor product, an e-cigarette!  Did you know that young people who have ever used e-cigarettes are 5 times more likely to be diagnosed with Covid-19?  And young people who have ever used e-cigarettes plus conventional cigarettes are 7 times more likely to be diagnosed with Covid-19.  We are at a critical tipping point, but we can turn this epidemic around through education.

Upon completing the series, participants will be able to:

  • Describe electronic nicotine delivery systems (ENDS), also called e‑cigarettes: what they are and how they work
  • Discuss what is known and not known about the health effects of e‑cigarette use.
  • Identify marketing strategies used by tobacco companies to make e‑cigarettes appealing to youth
  • Explain basic concepts of addiction and how addiction affects the adolescent brain
  • Describe how e‑cigarettes may be used to consume marijuana concentrates and the consequences for adolescents
  • Access and use the RISAS Vaping Toolkit

Upon completion of the pre-test, each module, and post-test participants will earn 3 contact hours.
