Chinese Medicine considers our bodies a microcosm of the natural world and as such, each organ system is related to a season, an aspect of nature, an element, emotions, and body tissue. According to the 5 Elements theory of Chinese Medicine the Liver + Gallbladder are the organ systems related to Spring and the Wood element. This is where manifestation begins to form from deep seeds of potential and is reflected in nature when plants begin to grow upwards, new shoots rising out of the ground.

The Liver meridian goes from the inside edge of your big toe, up the inner leg, onto the abdomen shifting internally below sixth rib then internally running within the liver, lungs and thoat and ending at the top of your head. The Gall Bladder begins at the corner of the outside of the eye, around the ear, back up and around ear toward above pupil, down to the base of hairline to top of shoulder, down lateral side of body and leg and ends on the lateral side of the fourth toe. For more detailed images on these meridians click here.

Typical Spring season imbalances, particularly irritability, frustration, or even anger can arise if there is stagnation in these channels. Yin Poses that target the glutes, like shoelace, dragonfly with a twist, and reclined butterfly can help rebalance Qi flow. Check out a few great poses below to stretch out and get energy (qi) flowing through the Liver meridian.

Shoelace: There are several options for coming into this pose. One way is to begin by kneeling on all fours then place one knee behind the other and sit back between the heels. A second approach is to begin by sitting on your heels and then slide onto one buttock and bring the outside foot over toward the opposite hip. A third approach is to begin by sitting cross-legged and then draw one foot under the opposite thigh and the other foot over toward the opposite hip. This is a great opportunity in this pose to stimulate Liver 3 point (as shown in the picture).

Dragonfly With A Twist: From a sitting position, spread your legs apart until they won't go any further. Sitting on a cushion will help tilt your hips and anteriorly rotate your hips. You can integrate a twist in to get deeper into the side body stretch and activate both the Gall Bladder and Liver Meridians.

Reclined Butterfly: Begin sitting on the floor legs extended. Bring the soles of the feet together with the knees out to the side, making a diamond shape with the legs.Lie back either on the floor, a bolster, or propped on your forearms. If supported, place your hands on your belly or out to the sides.

Coming out of winter after reflection, we enter spring where we order and plant our seeds of intention. Our lives are like gardens...now is the time to grind down the stumps, and clear out the brush, and plant the seeds that we have ordered.

The Wood element empowers us to find clarity around our direction and vision so that we can move towards our goals, play with our creativity and imagination, and cultivate emotional balance and release any stuck emotional patterns.

As you start to fully embrace this process of planting your seeds, below are a few prompts to help you along your way:

  1. Am I 100% myself? How many things are in the way of me ordering the correct seeds? Identify.

(Ex. processing someone else’s emotions, fulfilling someone else's goals other than your own, an incorrect belief, below the line)

2.    Is someone else ordering seeds for me? Do I need to cancel their order?

(Ex. someone wants you to be their fix-it person, their teacher, their answer, responsible for their lack of self-development)

3.    How many seeds are there to order? Identify. (likely something you have not yet ordered in your life)

(Ex. financial success, your reputation, your legacy, a new car, a rate sheet, an editor for your book, new clothes, painting your house)

4.    I crave?

5.    Other than time or money I want more of this?

6.    I need to give myself more permission to be…

7.    What do I do even though I don’t want to?

8.    This brings me alive, brightens me, reminds me of who I am…

Focus on eating cooling and soothing foods while adding the bitter and sour flavoured foods. Fruits and raw veggies are moistening + energetically cooling to help relieve digestion if it is strong. However if digestion is weak then lightly steamed veg, soups and stewed fruits are better.

Green microalgae powders are considered cooling and also detoxifying to the liver. Spirulina is the most cooling algae of them all. Bitter and sour flavors are decongesting and cleansing for the liver. Herbal teas like dandelion root tea or burdock root, and bitter lettuce greens like endive and raddiccio are good suggestions. Tangerine or orange peel added to dishes or teas will increase the bitter flavor. Adding lemon juice or apple cider vinegar to water as a beverage, or sprinkling over vegetables will increase the sour flavor. Who doesn't love an avocado toast and sprout meal?
