Big News for Next Year

Jam packed with exciting news, big plans and January sales!

In the past year I have learnt so much. When you're starting out new as a self employed person, you end up taking on anything and everything. Of course, I have worked on fantasy from children's to middle grade to YA to adult. I've done a few literary magazines. I've done a business book. I've done a stint on retainer for a tech firm working with a blog writer. I've done work on sustainability. If it excites me, I've worked on it.

Looking ahead to the next year, my third year of business, I am filled with excitement about what is to come. Here is a little look at what you can expect of me in 2023.

AJ Editorial

More free resources this winter

I am slowly building a bank of resources that will be available free to authors. Right now there are four available. One of them helps you with plotting and tracking your writing. The other three support authors who are already working with an editor. The next step is to build resources that will help you with doing your own edits.

A new look for AJ Editorial

This year I will be updating my visual branding. The deep blues and bookish graphics have served me well over the past two years but it is time for a change. My new branding will reflect more of who I am and the types of fiction I work with. You're already seeing it with the images I use on blogs and newsletters!

A little more me on the internet

Watch this space! I'm going to be a little more lively across social media. You can find me on Instagram, Twitter, Mastodon, Tumblr and LinkedIn (if you're so inclined). Twitter and Mastodon are my free flowing thoughts, with Mastodon leaning more to my writing content and Twitter more to my editing. If you want to see the pets in my life and chat about the ins and outs of editing, Instagram is where to find me. Tumblr is all silliness and writing. I post there snippets of my work as well as long form rambles about how we can improve our writing. LinkedIn is all business, honestly I wouldn't follow me there if I didn't have to. But each to their own!

My writing life

If you follow me on Mastodon, you'll know that I have two whole writing projects in the works. My fantasy adventure, What They're Hiding, is at writing stage. It isn't what you want to hear, but I don't think this project will ever see the light of day. I'm super excited to get finished with writing and move through all of the editing process with it. It has been an excellent journey in learning about myself as a writer, what works for me and how the skills are so different from editing. But it isn't showing signs of hitting the mark. Still, my achievement will be writing my first book start to finish, and I will be proud of that.

My other work in progress is at plotting stage. Late to the Murder is a cosy murder mystery about a morally grey private investigator who, on their way to rough up their mark, gets side tracked and is late. When they get there, the mark is dead on the scene! If I thought What They're Hiding was heavily plotted, its because I clearly hadn't done a murder mystery before. I'm no where near the writing stage of this. Every detail must be ironed out!

Asteria Press

In January, the wonderful Holly Möller (check out her artwork, she does prints and book illustrations) and I are launching Asteria Press. Our shiny new publishing house will platform novels that take the fantasy genre and add a twist. Our titles will be warm, inspiring and full of joy. The first book you should look out for is what can only be described as a dragon murder mystery (written by Holly!). This is the first in a trilogy and enters production in January. More on this as it unfolds!

Writing Prompt

Does your fictional world have different celebrations to our real one? How are the celebrated? Who celebrates them? Who doesn't? Write it!

A new "live" chopped Christmas tree every year felt wasteful. A plastic tree that we use every year lacked whimsy. This Norfolk Pine was the answer to all our Christmas tree needs. 11 months of the year, its perfect. On the 12th month, its perfect but with decorations.
