Dear Supporters,
As Summer begins, we have been reflecting on our projects and some of the amazing achievements of our partners and supporters in Rwanda and in the UK. Umubano Academy has had a very exciting term so far! 14 students were lucky enough to sing at the opening of CHOGM in Rwanda while others have been showcasing their creative talents and considering how they can create a sustainable future in a collaborative recycling project with South Hampstead High School in the UK. Our Education for Positive Peace project continues to be implemented across Rwanda, supporting teachers to create a positive learning environment which develops the social and emotional skills of the students as well as their subject knowledge. We have also embarked on a new project focussing on how inclusive, adaptive, and engaging pedagogies are implemented - we can't wait to share our findings! We hope you enjoy reading our Summer Newsletter and look forward to sharing more updates throughout the year - please follow us on social media channels for more news as it happens! Umubano Academy at CHOGM 2022 After lots of hard work, 14 Umubano Academy students, from both primary and secondary were chosen to sing at the Opening of the CHOGM 2022 Business Forum! They sang ‘We Are the World’ and danced with other artists under the direction of Sherrie Silver. It was an unforgettable experience for the whole team; one that will live in their memories forever! |

Getting creative at Umubano Academy The Creative Arts programme really took off this term! A team of local artists worked with students in the primary and secondary phases to develop their skills and passion for painting, craft making and dance. Students also collaborated with a Rwandan poet to co-create a poem on the theme of resilience and aspiration.
We can't wait to share more of the students' work with you - keep an eye on our social media channels! |

Think Global, Act Local For the second year running, South Hampstead High School in London and Umubano Academy collaborated on a Sustainable Development Goals project focusing on recycling. The theme this year was 'Think Global, Act Local'. The students worked together on two challenges using recycled materials and presented their work in virtual meetings.
It was a fantastic opportunity for the students in the UK and Rwanda to share their knowledge and ideas for a greener future. |

Education for Positive Peace Over 5000 trainee teachers and 500 in-service teachers have taken part in our Education for Positive Peace (E4PP) course. We have had fantastic feedback from the course so far with many teachers commenting that it has improved their behaviour management strategies. Keza, a new teacher at Umubano Academy said that the course taught her that 'teaching is not only about delivering the subject content - it is important to develop the social and emotional skills of the learners'
The E4PP course is now live on the Rwanda Education Board's e-learning platform, making it accessible for all teachers across Rwanda. |

Innovative Pedagogies Project APIE have partnered with the Wellspring Foundation, the Ministry of Education and the Rwanda Basic Education Board to lead the Education Commission's Innovative Pedagogies Project in Rwanda. This project aims to create greater awareness and political will to adopt playful and inclusive teaching practices. Together, we will be working with schools in Rwanda to ensure every child has access to an engaging and adaptive education.
We are looking forward to our first policy dialogue in July where we will collectively reflect on how inclusive, engaging and adaptive pedagogies are implemented in Rwanda. If you'd like to learn more about this project, click here. |

Supporting children's access to education Without a school uniform, children in Rwanda are unable to attend school. But for many families, a school uniform is simply an expense that they can’t afford. By donating £30 to our scholarship fund, you can help ensure that a child in Rwanda doesn’t miss out on their education. Donate to our scholarship fund today and help to make school accessible to everyone! |
