MARCH 2022                                                             VOL. 2 -- ISSUE NO. 3

FILE: GLENN RUSSELL ©️ SEVEN DAYS

How is it March already? Just a few more months of winter (and mud season). Hang in there!

First, we want to give a quick shout out to our friend Maria Lara-Bregatta and her restaurant Café Mamajuana which nabbed a James Beard nomination in the Best New Restaurant category. I had the pleasure of working with Maria at an Adventure Dinner at the Burlington Surf Club almost 2 years ago. Since then, we've both had babies and often chat back and forth about chickens and first foods. Maria even grabbed one of our turkeys last fall and I finally got to meet her adorable baby girl.  We couldn't be more thrilled for her and you can read the article about her nomination HERE.

If you're local to Burlington, definitely go by and grab some of her food whenever you get the chance.

This is a huge accomplishment...congrats, my friend!

New merch alert! You know we love custom designed gear. Next up are these custom KCF tote bags that will be available for purchase in the Farm Store later this spring.

I've spent countless hours grocery shopping for work (and home), so I had a lot of opinions on what bags we should use. These are big enough to hold a ton of veggies and have reinforced straps to hold the weight. They also can be wiped down so no need to throw them into the laundry where they'll most likely shrink and shrivel. They also have an exterior pocket for any delicates, such as herbs or tomatoes.

If you are one of our CSA members, you will receive these totes as part of your membership.

(Note: this is a mock-up and the final product will have the Killeen Crossroads Farm logo on the front.)

Despite the snow, the increase in daylight means the chickens are starting to lay eggs again. And even more exciting are the additional 80 baby chicks nestled into the warm room in our barn.

By the peak of summer, we should have 150 chickens foraging for bugs and laying white, brown, blue and green eggs. We’re thrilled as we know how much you all love the eggs too. As soon as we have enough to sell, we’ll let you know.

We've been listening to all of your requests, and we now have 5 options for CSA packages that will be available for the Summer 2022 and Fall 2022 seasons. The new option--an individual CSA share-- caters to those who just want a sprinkling of veggies on hand in the crisper drawer each week. And at just over $12 per week, how could you resist?

Also, don't forget to check out all of the Member Benefits that come with signing up and browse our different packages.

For those of you who are on the ball and have already purchased a CSA share, thank you! Please make sure you submit your member information form so we can complete your registration.

Swiss Chard and Roasted Vegetable Quiche

We're still a few months from fresh veggies popping out of the ground, but a great way to intensify your current grocery store produce is by roasting it. Use your favorite produce--or whatever is left in your fridge--to make this easy quiche that is perfect for breakfast, brunch, lunch, or dinner. If you’ve got a favorite savory pie dough recipe, use it here or grab a store-bought version to speed things up.

For you locals, we're a big fan of Mirabelle's pie dough. Here's a list of places you can find it.

For those of you that know me, the past few weeks have been pretty hard. EatingWell Magazine will no longer be in print (more info can be found here), and the team I've worked with for 9 years was disbanded in an afternoon. The silver lining in all of this is that I'll get to see a lot more of you all on the farm this summer, and I look forward to sharing more details with everyone soon.
