Welcome to this week's update on Colombo's meal deals, happy hours and events. Sorry for the lack of mail last week. Things were changing rapidly as we were drafting the mail, restrictions tightening, and many places were not sure events would go ahead. In the end many happenings were cancelled. This week - and next - will be fairly quiet. Many places remain open for food and drink, though with reduced capacity. Events have almost all been cancelled, but most happy hours seem to still be....well, happy. Almost all gigs have been cancelled, though one or two places still hope to have bands this weekend. As many people are preferring to stay at home, we have added a new page for restaurants where you can order food for delivery. We're not putting in the obvious ones that everyone knows; we've including places not know for their delivery, or smaller places. See www.HappeningColombo.com/Delivery. We'll update the pages regularly with any events and new delivery places that we hear of. Stay Safe, Stay Well. If you like this, please sign up below and forward it to your friends to subscribe. |

Breakfast, Lunch and Brunch For your nutritious start to the day, Asylum is still open from 8am for breakfast, through the day. Cafe Nuga also opens at 8am for its breakfast selection. Plates at Cinnamon Grand have launched a great deal for their lunch buffet: buy two and a third person dines free. That's available from 12pm to 3pm. With all the current challenges, it's nice to see a couple of new places opening up. The first one is in Full'r, in Colombo 5 offering locally sourced, hand made burgers for take away or delivery through Uber Eats or PickMe Food. The photos look good and we have seen a good recommendation from someone who has tried them.

HighTea and Dinner: We mentioned the pay for two and a third person dines free at Plates; that deal's also good for their evening dinner buffet which is open 7pm to 11pm. Another new place has opened last week, Banjo's. Located by Boralesgamuwa Lake, they offer Sri Lankan, Asian, European and fusion food for eat-in or takeaway. Cinnamon Hotels have launched their own delivery platform; you can choose from any of the restaurants at Cinnamon Grand or Cinnamon Lakeside and order online. Orders over Rs10,000 are delivered free. If you want to treat mum for Mother's Day but don't want to go out, Waters Edge are delivering their High Tea, on that day only (9th May, in case didn't know!) but you need to preorder. For more delivery ideas, check out our new Delivery page. We're not listing all the places offering delivery; just ones that are perhaps less well known, smaller places or ones that are a bit different.

Happy Hours & Ladies' Night Happy Hours still seem to be happening at a number of places. Honey Beach Club, The Steuart, AllStars, The Irish and Asylum have all confirmed that the happy hour is still happy; many others are too. However, most places are restricted to just 25% capacity so it's a good idea to call ahead and check the happy hour and to reserve a table. We have even discovered one new Happy Hour, at the Urban Grill Restaurant and Pub in Pelawatte, daily from 5pm to 7pm and all day on Sunday. The Urban Grill also have a Ladies Night on Thursdays which they say is still taking place. Many others have temporarily suspended their ladies nights. .

Live Music & DJs Sadly almost all live music events have been cancelled this week, so there is unlikely to be much, if anything at all. Only Honey Beach Club have said that they are still hoping to have their bands on Friday (Dream Caravan) and Saturday (Warehouse Project). Of course the gigs will finish early, by 10pm. Sadly Suriya Brothers' "Acoustic Rock Night" scheduled for 29th May has also been cancelled. Let's hope that music will return soon! Whatever you choose - be safe and enjoy!

Other Events Almost all events seem to have been cancelled for the next few weeks in the interest of public health. However we have found instead a few online events that might be of interest. On Saturday 8May, British Council presents Rediscovering Sri Lanka, a conversation with writers Dr Razeen Sally and Capt. Elmo Jayawardena, discussing Sri Lankan history, lore and their personal experiences. Hay Festival takes place 26May to 6June and has gone online. A myriad of stars of screen, stage and literature will come together for a programme of literary arts - interviews with writers, performances, poetry, plays and more. There's lots happening every day with people joining from around the world.

Looking Ahead Next week is Mental Health Awareness Week in UK. Especially important nowadays, with the challenges and turmoil that many have faced over the past 12 months. If you're interested, there is some information here. Keep checking www.HappeningColombo.com for events, they are added daily, as we hear about them. And please mention HappeningColombo when you go to any of these events. Whatever you do, stay safe. And visit HappeningColombo regularly to find out what is happening. It's updated every day! |
