March is the month of expectation

I have always found the end of winter hard. And it turns out in Colorado that winter can be looong. By this point I am done with snow and despite the blazing sunshine today and my irises started to sprout, I know that I could see snow any time in the next two months. But I know the end is in sight. There are green things and the day is longer. There really is a sense of expectation and anticipation in the air.

In me, that translates into a sense of impatience - I want all the things, now. I have re-emerged from my annual February slump and I'm raring to go. Bring on the new business, bring on the sunny weather, bring on the vacations! I am going to be away in April for 10 days (8-18) so if there's anything you want from me before that, and I don't know about it - now is the time to let me know!

I hope spring is bringing you some energy and you're feeling positive about your life (despite what is actually going on in the wider world, but this isn't the time or place for that).

If you find (or buy) something green, please post it to Instagram and tag me! I'd love to see your plants.

Being a woman in business is hard

Recently I had a short rant on LinkedIn about women-focused business topics. Spoiler alert, I have strong opinions. It got more of a response than most of my posts and got me thinking about why it resonated. And given that March was Women's History Month, I thought I could be forgiven for indulging in a little woman-centric navel-gazing. So here goes.

How well do you know your audience?

This month, I did a talk about audience personas - what they are and why they matter. If you've done any work with me, you'll be familiar with the concept, but if not, persona-building could really help give you direction in your marketing. I got some good feedback on the talk so I thought I'd share a blog I previously wrote on the topic - it's a classic.

Last month I revealed the name of our new collective and in the background we are putting the final pieces in place pre-launch.

If you want to get our latest news as it happens, our Instagram feed is going to be the place to be. We've hijacked our resident graphic designer Gili Wolf's feed and from now on it's going to be all Alkimie, all the time.

Make your writing clear

This handy dandy tool was shared with me by a friend and I really like it! I have a tendency to make my writing overly complex. I enjoy long words and subordinate clauses. But that doesn't necessarily lead to clear writing. It's more of a symptom of the stream of consciousness of my brain. So this is a great tool to make my writing super clear!

PS: I don't know if you spotted the "deliberate" typo in my January newsletter. Congratulations if you did.

About me

This month's color is this amazing orange. This is a shot of the M on the hill behind Golden, Colorado. The M is for School of Mines, our local engineering school. Colorado gets some really beautiful sunsets and I took this snap getting out of my car one evening in town. We have some great little restaurants and bars in town and I love walking down into town to go to restaurants or shops when I have the time. It reminds me of living back in Europe.

See you next time.
