Your weekly update on news, events and developments in Neighbourhood and Community Centres across Queensland.

While we saw some success in the state budget with our Community Connect Workers being continued at 12 sites, it was disappointing that overall base funding for Neighbourhood and Community Centres saw no significant increases.    We are continuing to work with the Department to find better ways to support the sector with the next 12 months being a crucial time.  The Minister's speech at the QCOSS Budget Breakfast is below:

Mark Bailey MP made a recent visit to Sherwood Neighbourhood Centre to announce more than $950 000 over the next four years for Sherwood Neighbourhood Centre and Benarrawa Community Development Association. You can watch the video announcement below:

Mt Isa Neighbourhood Centre Manager Chris Connors has been long arguing for better local solutions to youth issues.  The budget announced a youth hub to assist youth on the streets facing alcholism and domestic violence at home.  You can read more in the Brisbane Times below:

QFCA members can apply for a new grants program from ANHCA. We've partnered with the Sidney Myer Fund to deliver 'Supporting Stronger Communities', for metro-based houses tackling poverty and disadvantage.  Grants are up to $10 000.  For rural/regional houses, grants are still being delivered by FRRR through their 'Strengthening Rural Communities' program which are between $10 000 and $25 000.  You can find out more about how to apply below:

Thriving People and Places is a grants program for organisations by the Vincent Fairfax Family Foundation.  Grants are between $20 000 and $50 000.  You can apply at the link below.  They also offer a grants program to Christian faith based organisations that neighbourhood and community centres may be working in partnership with:

Qantas has released a $5 million Regional Grants program. It will provide financial, flight and marketing support to community groups and organisations to help further their causes and set them up for success in regional areas.  You can apply at the link below:

Neighbourhood and Community centres are dealing with many housing issues with our clients across the state.  Qstars (Qld Tenancy Advice and Referral Service) help people with a range of tenancy issues and are a great organisation to link in with.  More details are on the flyer below:

Want a stronger management committee or board for your Neighbourhood or Community Centre?  The CoCB are presenting a workshop on Management Committee Essentials - Friday 12 July 9am for 9:15 start - 12:30 at Landsborough School of Arts Memorial Hall, 485 Old Landsborough Road, Landsborough. Hervey Bay Neighbourhood Centre continues to grow from strength to strength, with another $195 000 from the Dignity First Fund to boost their Wandering Teapot Social Enterprise.  The QFCA is exploring ways that social enterprise models such as this may be shared across the sector.  You can read more below:

Mossman Support Services (Douglas Shire Community Services Association Ltd) also benefited from the Dignity First Fund with $153,702 towards a homeless activity hub that links with the Neighbourhood Centre.  You can read more below:

Entitled "A Place for Everyone" and held in Toowoomba, early bird tickets are now on sale for the Community Development Queensland Conference.  We're aiming to develop a Neighbourhood Centre stream for the conference and are encouraging the sector to submit proposals for presentations.  We'd love to hear from centres about social enterprises, disasters, community governance, community development and all the things we do best!    You can download the proposal form for presentations here:
