Research Insights: Empowering Women's Health

Heart disease is the leading cause of death in women; and a woman's risk of developing heart disease risk increases once she is in menopause. It would be easy to assume that means estrogen is healthy for the heart but it is more complicated than that and there are significant gaps in our knowledge. What we do know now is that estrogen is the safest for perimenopausal women, women within 10 years of their last period or are less than 60 years old. Furthermore, as of now, estrogen is not prescribed to protect the heart or to treat heart disease.

Favorite Recipe: Better for you than ice cream and still delicious

Jean's pick:

Slice and freeze 3-4 bananas (pending how hungry you think you will be and how much you like bananas, I like them a lot)

Add the frozen bananas to a blender or food processor and mix with 1 teaspoon of vanilla extract and one tablespoon of peanut butter (I like the honey peanut butter)

It comes out creamy and delicious and my husband doesn't like bananas, so I don't have to worry about him eating all of my dessert.

"A few our favorite things:" lip and chin hair removal at IOIO Medical Spa

Anna's pick:

Ladies, if you want to do yourself a solid, splurge on lip and chin hair removal!  I finally went this summer after talking about it for years. Of course, the post pandemic masks finally coming off spurred me on. But this luxury has made a significant difference in my upkeep. I barely think about plucking any more. Not that you won't have a straggler here and there but significant improvement. May need a touch up yearly is what I understand but three-monthly sessions in and I'm feeling pretty good about it!

What we are reading:

"The Galveston Diet" by Mary Claire Haver, MD

Rachel's pick: The Galveston diet was developed by Mary Claire Haver MD, a Texas-based ob-gyn, in 2017. Dr. Haver used to tell her patients to eat less and exercise more. It wasn’t until she, too, experienced the changes of menopause and mid-life weight gain that she realized this advice doesn’t work.

The Galveston Diet consists of three main components: intermittent fasting, an anti-inflammatory approach to nutrition, and shifting your nutritional intake to fuel your body,

Women who have attended our retreats have commented how much they love the support of other women. The first 3 Wednesday evenings in September we are hosting webinars on 3 different topics: bladder health, vaginal changes in menopause, and hot flashes.
