Fieldwork and Consultations with Indigenous Artisans in Mexico

Dear CIPRI Friend,

It's been a while since our last e-mail to you but we come with exiciting news!

For the first time since we formally began our systems-change work in April 2018, the Cultural Intellectual Property Rights Initiative® is in Mexico to disseminate the 3Cs - Get Weaving! Campaign and conduct consultations in Chiapas with 100+ Indigenous Artisans around our framework for fair and equitable collaborations between creative industries and Indigenous Peoples: The 3Cs Rule Consent. Credit. Compensation©

Why is this important?

Direct participation of Indigenous Peoples is essential for developing legal frameworks and tools that serve their interests and needs. The Campaign has been translated into two Mayan languages, Tzeltal and Totsil, by the Chiapas Photography Project and Sna Jtz’ibajom. It will now be subject to consultations on best practice scenarios and applications in the local cultural context in Chiapas.

You can support our work by donating via this GoFundMe Fundraising Campaign: Consultations with Indigenous Artisans in Mexico

How can YOU help?

The Cultural Intellectual Property Rights Initiative® Team and all associated partners are conducting this work 100% pro-bono.

However, securing financial support is necessary to ensure that we are able to conduct this fieldwork and consultations in optimal conditions.

This includes:

  • Printing 500 hard copies of bilingual booklets with the content of the 3Cs - Get Weaving! Campaign in Tzeltal and Totsil languages to be distributed to the representatives present at the consultations and to be subsequently disseminated by them in their communities;

  • Shipping of materials from Mexico City, where the booklets are printed, to the towns where the consultations take place (the weight of the 500 brochures is approx. 40kg);

  • Transport of the teams involved in organizing the consultations;

  • Video recording of the consultation sessions for transparency and accuracy of data collection;

Legal context in Mexico

In January 2022 the Mexican Congress passed The Federal Law for the Protection of the Cultural Heritage of Indigenous and Afro-Mexican Peoples and Communities. However, since entering into force, the law has generated much confusion among Indigenous and Afro-Mexican Peoples and fashion industry stakeholders. Significant gaps exist between the legal theoretical framework and its translation into practice.

The 3Cs Rule Consent. Credit. Compensation© is a tool meant to bridge this gap.

You can also support us by sharing our GoFundMe Fundraising Campaign in your networks. Each share takes us one step closer to our goal! Simply click on the Campaign below and then on the Share button to distribute our Cmapaign in your social networks.
