Newsletter January 2022

Hi Everyone!

Happy New Year! Wishing you all a safe and fulfilling 2022.

This is just a quick update to fill you in on some news.

Omicron has canceled most in-person performances here in Berlin, which is necessary to keep everyone safe, but frustrating nonetheless.

In the last newsletter I told you about the grant I received to produce the staged version of the Wesendonck Lieder, that I've been working on with playwright and director Mary Kelly. I finally have more news!

The piece will premier on YouTube on February 6th, and will be available for the remainder of the month. The piece is an amalgamation of opera, research, and poetry so we are not exactly sure what to call it, but for now we have settled on calling it an opera play. We have taken Wagner's Wesendonck lieder and used them to tell a very personal story of belonging and have paired most of the songs with a poem from contemporary women of color. We included the poetry to highlight the fact that the poems from Mathilde Wesendonck are still relevant and talk about universal subjects felt by many women even today.

I did receive a grant from die Akademie der Künste for the development and research of the project, super thankful. As part of fulfilling the requirements for the grant I have put together an accompanying website for the piece. I hope you'll have a look when you have time

Every December I perform in a Christmas show and every year I sing the same solo. It is "Sometimes I feel like a Motherless Child". I sing it because it is my Great Aunt Harriet's (103 years old) favourite song and she's back in California. This year the drummer recorded the solo during one of the shows and put it on YouTube. Enjoy

Upcoming, I will have the honour of singing in a concert for the Berlin Brandenburg Wagner Society. This is a concert that has been rescheduled from 2020 and will be on May 2nd at Komische Oper Berlin. Please check my website for more details, which I will post as they become available.
