LOCAL PRESERVES AND PARKS…AND WHERE TO FIND RESOURCES

Are you sometimes confused by the names of the surrounding Preserves and Park that comprise 52,503 acres of Sonoran Desert in Fountain Hills and Scottsdale? And do you wonder where to find maps and other information?  This should help clear up the confusion:

  • The McDowell Mountain Preserve is located in Fountain Hills and offers more than eight miles of trails on 824 acres. The Preserve can be accessed at the Adero Canyon Trailhead and Golden Eagle Trailhead. Information about the Preserve and Trail Maps can be found on the Town of Fountain Hills website at https://www.fh.az.gov/295/McDowell-Mountain-Preserve-Trails. The nonprofit Sonoran Conservancy of Fountain Hills (SCFH) supports the Town's efforts. Information about the Conservancy and its programs can be found at www.SCFH.org.

  • The McDowell Sonoran Preserve, comprised of 30,580 acres, is located in Scottsdale with more than 225 miles of trails.  Maps can be downloaded from the City of Scottsdale website, https://www.scottsdaleaz.gov/preserve, or picked up at any Preserve trailhead.  The nonprofit arm supporting the City's efforts is the McDowell Sonoran Conservancy.  More information about the Conservancy can be found at https://www.mcdowellsonoran.org

  • The McDowell Mountain Regional Park, with 21,099 acres, is located to the north of Fountain Hills. It abuts both Preserves. More information, including maps, can be found at https://www.maricopacountyparks.net/mcdowell-mountain-regional-park/

  • For an overview map of the Preserves and Park, and the connecting trails, view or download the following map at https://4bdacffa-4ee7-4203-9b70-dca604bf4104.filesusr.com/ugd/f384ce_b0a3b2d4d8424308b7520eeb569accab.pdf

We suggest you also load a hiking app such as AllTrails or Gaia to your cell phone which shows all the trails in the Preserves and Park.

And remember, hike carefully and have fun!  Following are some general safe-hiking tips:
