SINSHEIMER SCHOOL GRADE 4 ON THE FARM FIELD TRIP |
On Wednesday December 11, 57 students from Grade 4 classes at Sinsheimer Elementary School spent two hours at City Farm learning about the Soil-Food Web. Education Coordinator, Teresa Lees provided teachers with preparatory materials tailored to their Next Generation Curriculum standards and set up four locations with guest experts who provided instruction and hands-on learning exercises. |
The whole group assembled in the Pergola and were introduced to the factors that determined soil health: Chemistry, Biology, Geology, and Compost |
With word games and work sheets students learned major and minor chemical elements of healthy soil and how to assure their presence |
At the Biology station, Soil Scientist Amanda Smith taught students about the mutually supporting interactions among bacteria, fungi, invertebrates and plant roots. Then students uncovered worms and mycelium under the mulch in the soil around them. |
At the Geology station, Cob expert Chad Franco took students to the clay pit behind the house he built with volunteers, introduced them to the rocky parent materials making up our farm soil and let them create their own soil sculptures. |
At the Compost station, volunteer Kelly Hughes engaged students in turning the piles to maintain the heat necessary to transform trash to the treasure that they then applied to our row crops. At the end of the two hour class students had free time to explore and feed the chickens. For more pictures of this field trip, click here |
