The Battle of Culloden: April 16, 1746

The Battle of Culloden occurred on April 16, 1746. The Jacobite army of Charles Edward Stuart (Bonnie Prince Charlie) was decisively defeated by a British government force under William Augustus, Duke of Cumberland, on the estate of Duncan Forbes, Lord Culloden (1685 - 1747). Forbes was appointed as Lord President of the Court of Session, becoming the senior British legal officer in Scotland. Forbes and John Campbell, Earl of Loudoun raised 2,000 recruits to oppose the uprising. Prince Charles used the Culloden Estate as his headquarters during the preparations for the Battle of Culloden. After the defeat of the Jacobites, Forbes opposed the 1746 Dress Act banning Highland attire except when worn in military service. This advice was largely ignored. Forbes was financially ruined, due to the damage done to his estate and to the lack of government reimbursement for the monies he spent on troops. A cairn was erected on the battlefield by his descendent, also called Duncan Forbes. Learn more about Duncan Forbes, Lord Culloden, here: https://www.clan-forbes.org/duncan-forbes
