Dear Champion 4 Public Education:
We need your voice today!
In recent months, activist parents, unhappy with the decisions of our local school boards, have hijacked the recall process for elected officials in Virginia, and have tried to harass and intimidate school board members with whom they disagree. The law related to recalling an elected official was designed and enacted as a final check for citizens against an officer who, while in office, is “negligent,” “incompetent” or “misuses” his office. There is no statute that allows anyone to force someone from elected office for simply having another point of view—In fact, that is called authoritarianism, and violates every principle of democracy.
Incredibly, Governor Youngkin has just now taken this undemocratic and dangerous strategy, not a step, but a football field further! This week, while reviewing HB 1138, a wildly bi-partisan bill seeking to stagger the terms of the Loudoun County School Board in order to better ensure institutional memory, he proposed to “un-elect” every single duly-elected board member and take away the franchise of every Loudoun County voter.
This is a bold and outrageous assault on voter rights, public education and our democratic principle of “one man, one vote.” Make no mistake, this is an attempt to consolidate power without regard for the basic democratic rights of Virginians.
He was elected Governor, not anointed king. This dangerous assault on the fundamental principles of democracy must stop here and now.
Please contact your legislator today. Ask them to please reject this undemocratic and un-American assault on voter’s rights and democratic values.
Simply state; “I support the original intent of HB 1138 and urge you to reject the Governor’s amendments."
