Hello everyone!

July's newsletter highlights exciting events and happenings at Valiant Scribe: i) we are officially (belatedly) welcoming our guest video editor, Lyonel Laverde-Hansen (watch out for our latest interview on the 1st of August), ii) our poetry competition is closing on the 15th of August, iii) we are launching an exclusive showcase of VaL Smit's artwork and poetry, including an author interview, iv) we are featuring poetry on women's rights, civil rights icons, and the legacy of slavery in the United States, finally, v) we are celebrating Melanie Hyo-In Han's new book: "Sandpaper Tongue, Parchment Lips."

Melanie's chapbook touched my heart profoundly, a beautiful collection of poetry interweaving identity, multiculturalism, diversity, racism, interconnectivity, and the lack thereof. Her book takes me on a trip to South Korea, Tanzania, and the United States. As a global citizen, I find a reflection of my struggles and experiences mirrored in this collection, as will anyone who has struggled with issues of identity and otherness.

                                                                                                              with love,

                                                                                                                        Debra

TOMORROW (1 August): Valiant Scribe will launch an exclusive showcase of VaL Smit's work highlighting the strength of diversity, and equity, the importance of nature, and activism.

VaL Smit is a South African artist and poet who writes ekphrastic poetry per artwork created and uses various media in portraying images that she feels fitting to deliver the message of the words she pens down.

She focuses on the inner turmoil experienced by our disconnectedness from nature and each other.

Visit our website tomorrow to enjoy her work!

New Poetry

Good Trouble - A poem honoring John Lewis (February 21, 1940-July 17, 2020).

Written by Chella Courington. Good Trouble I was fifteen in a small Alabama town when I first heard your name John Lewis, then Edmund Pettus Bridge. Their clubs cracked your bones. Their tear gas clogged your lungs. An iron pipe almost ended your life. But you stood up.

Of No Nation - A poem about slave trade and assimilation

Written by A'Ja Lyons.

Facing Up by Lynn White - A poem about protesting for women's rights

Written by Lynn White. You're looking past her avoiding her eyes, the eyes of the woman in the front line of the protest the one who reminds you of your mother or your mother in law or your grandmother or all of them together.
