Know This Love That Surpasses Knowledge

by Diana Sim

Irena and I have been studying Ephesians 3:14-21 during our prayer time as we start each morning. Humbling ourselves we contemplate with gratitude; on the strong roots we have through the Spirit of Christ in our inner being. Irena’s home is in Ukraine, her family are all remaining in their homes.

Holding onto safety and clinging to hope. Each new day brings the thought of “are my family and friends safe?” “Are the people of Ukraine safe?” The questions of uncertainty arise and bring thoughts of disbelief.
Reading this prayer by Paul to the Ephesians, we have been reminded to grasp and hold on to just how wide and long and high and deep Christ’s love is for us. We can know that God’s love surpasses our knowledge, and He is able to do immeasurably more than we ask or imagine.
Prayer requests have come to the Centre… what do we do with those requests? We have prayer teams that pray for each request. Our prayer teams pray for each of you as we pray for the “life of the Centre”. One of the Sisters emailed me this week, “God is with you!” Life at the Centre is evolving, as programs unfold the doors are opening more and more. Over 95 people were involved with the Centre last week. Excitement was stirred as we welcomed people to come.
We are inspired as we witness programs filling up. This particular passage in Ephesians has nourished our spirits as we contemplate on the vastness of God’s love for each one of us. May you be inspired through hope and encouraged to hold on to the peace that stirs within your spirit.
With gratitude, we are inspired to serve, trusting in God’s leading as the future of the Centre unfolds.
God IS with you.

Board Reflection by Lise Schmidt

The second point the Board discussed regarding our core values at the Martha Retreat Centre is: “Reflection, Rest, Silence.”

So many of us tend to lead such busy lives these days that it’s important to take time for ourselves to quiet our hearts and minds and to find a bit of stillness.

So many people who come to the Centre talk about the “feel” they have as soon as they walk through the front door. They mention that life just seems to slow down a bit when they’re at the Centre. The staff and the Board of Directors work hard to continue providing this feeling of quiet and peace to our patrons.

Here are a few thoughts we shared about this month’s core value:

* The building keeps out so much of the noise which helps establish a sense of silence

* It’s important to be greeted quietly when we enter the Centre to remind us to be quiet ourselves

* We are all accountable to the silence of the Centre – we have to tone down our energy when we enter the building in order to appreciate the gentle atmosphere

* There are “levels” of silence

* It’s a gift to be silent and to reflect

* This is the core of what we do at the Centre

* This is a place to reflect on what’s really important, to rest a bit and to enjoy the silence.

We also spoke about the fact that so many people do not seem to enjoy “silence”. Perhaps it’s because many have become accustomed to always being busy doing one thing or another. One of the most surprising gifts people tend to find at the Centre is that once they experience the silence at the Centre they are attracted to come back to get more of the reflection, rest and silence the Centre offers through a wide variety of ways.
