The other day, one of my members was bemoaning the fact that she was now on yet another committee. This time, it was for her neighborhood association. When I asked her why she agreed to do it, she said, “If I didn’t, no one else would.” We’ve all been in that situation: feeling like we have to do something we’d rather not because “no one else will,” or “I don't have a choice.” I don't buy it. While there are some commitments that we really do need to assume, such as caring for a sick child, most of the jobs we sign-up for are optional; you do have a choice. Keeping that in mind can be empowering—and make your tasks more enjoyable if you choose to do them (like washing the dishes when your husband has to study!). This is especially true as we head into the holidays. In addition to juggling all of our regular responsibilities, we’re asked to take-on a slew of seasonal to-do’s: cooking, entertaining, traveling, etc. No wonder many of us dread this time of year! What if, this year, you just did what you really wanted to do? Instead of making dozens of cookies for your office party, what if you brought something store-bought? Or, instead of trying to squeeze in visits to all of your family members on the same day, what if you spread your travels throughout November and December? Or, instead of sending holiday cards to the-folks-you-lived-next-door-to-thirty-years-ago-but-haven't-talked-to-since, what if you just sent them to people you really care about and spent your saved time creating something beautiful for the world—or just yourself? I know what some of you are thinking: “But, Pam, I enjoy doing all of those things!” If that’s truly how you feel, and doing these things really feeds your soul, then go for it! But, if there’s any part of you that’s questioning your motivation (i.e., you’re doing them to gain approval or affection), I encourage you to at least consider the alternative. Anyone who really loves you would want you to follow your heart. If you need some holiday want-tos to replace your holiday have-tos, we’ve got plenty at the studio! And, if you're local, I hope that you'll visit the Purple Crayon booth at the 'Tis the Season Holiday Fair 11/16-18 at the WNC Agricultural Center. I'll be promoting the studio, and several of our members will be selling their art. While we're on the subject of holiday shopping, if you're looking for the perfect gift to give your loved ones, you can't go wrong with a Purple Crayon gift certificate. Not only will your friends and family learn something new, but they'll have a blast doing it! Contact Us for more information. Finally, it's not too late to schedule a Girls’ Night (or Day) Out for you and your girlfriends this holiday season. Now that would be something that you'd enjoy! I look forward to playing with you! —Pam Robbins, Owner |
